Sorry a bit of a rant at the same time of asking a question but how many canters do you do on an everyday hack Because me and my friends usually go for a few canters and just have fun, but now yard owner has now got the idea that we gallop everywhere "ruining" our horses and saying that we should only have 1 canter per hack!

And what top it all of the yard owners daughter (who thinks the same as her mom about the i canter per hack rule) was telling us the other day how she rides one of her horses and leads the other at the same time whilst riding them along the main rode, then taking them in fields and just cantering them!! it just really bugs me how they think they can do things when we cant!

and my moms friend also, told the yard owner about asking wether a young girl wants to try her pony to but and that she might be hacking with us, then yard owner goes " oh dont go with them they will just gallop about , so take them with my daughter" The women didnt know how to say no to the Yo so just said ok , and this woman knows that we are sensible when it comes to seriouse things like that

Sorry rant over , but just is it true that you should only have 1 canter per hack?

thanks x

xD I don't canter on hacks.
Ever.
Mainly because I take the same route everytime and the ground is foul at the moment.
If it dried out I may consider it.
But I don't think it depends on the number of canters as such, just how much, how the ground is, how fit your horse is etc;

I used to have a few canters and perhaps a gallop on most hacks the last 18years. I only haven't in recent times due to seren and her bad feet, but maybe we can do it again now the ground is nice and soft.
I don't see a problem with a few nice canters on some good ground, I think horses can really enjoy a little canter. You are not ruining your horses so just ignore this person

It depends on the ground. If the ground is good then we have quite a lot of canters, but as it is very wet atm it is unlikely I will be cantering whilst out for a while.

Crikey, is this your own pony or the YO's. I'm not quite sure where she got the idea that she can tell you where, when and how you can ride but I think she is out of order really. It could just be that she thinks she is protecting your pony and maybe she has the wrong idea about you, personally I would be having a 'chat' with her and then making a decision on whether to stay on her yard or not!

is the pony yours or the YO?

if the pony is yours then do what you like on a hack dont worry what people say. if the pony is the YO then you have to respect how they want their pony ridden

Also aswell , we went on a hack with a girl on this horse who is loaned from yo horse is usually fantastic but on this one hack horse reared up and toppled on to thi girl came back home yo blamed it on me and my friend for "galloping" about and we only had 2 canters that hack and it was like the millionth time we have all be on a hack together and so we thought , why would that horse only ust do it now? After that day another girl took that horse hunting with the yo owners daughter on her horse and the same horse reared up with that girl , and did not tell the loaner he did this!! yard ownerf inally then put it down to the girl putting the bit down so then the horse thought he was hunting!! grr really annoying! really dont know what to do tbh!

I think that so long as the horse is fit and the ground good, then you should do at least one canter on a hack. A good gallop wouldn't hurt either.

My horse spends all day in the field and loves to get out and stretch her legs. Just like us, it must be good to get some proper exercise.

We canter in diffrent places depeding on who we are with and the ground. We currently have access to several nice fields so we tend to canter in each direction a few times round then sometimes if the ground is good and they have behaved we open them up for a gallop. So no I dont just canter once on a hack as we stop for a breather in the middle. All the YO asks is we keep to the edge and make sure it dosent get churned up.

Depending on the ground, how fit the horse is etc....I normally have a few canters and a good fast canter/gallop blast nearly every hack. Hell, in fact the other day I rode late and made a normally just over an hour hack around the valleys last about 30-40 minutes as I was trotting/cantering the whole way around to get back before the darkness came!! The ground was good and the mare is super fit.

Why should you only have one canter per hack, how does she think eventers/hunters etc get fit and manage what they do?

What should you do?.....Ignore her and get on with it :)

One canter per hack! That's the fun bit, when I ride I canter at nearly every opportunity haha. Ignore the YO, you sound quite young (no offence) I was the same at your age, and no pony I ever rode was ruined because of cantering or galloping anywhere. If you canter in the same place every time the horses will start anticipating it and tanking off, and if the ground is really hard then it would be stupid but in general, one canter per hack, what a joke.

I canter at every available opportunity!! We are lucky enough to be at the foot of the downs with a massive forest and gallops!! Now how could I resist not cantering along there every time, that would just be a waste!!

I try to not listen to other people's sour grapes. I love to canter and gallop as long as the ground is good. We spend so much time with it either too boggy or too hard that good ground is a godsend for opening them up. Having gained a reputation from the YN as being irresponsible for cantering while out on hacks, only a few people come out with me now. This is fine, as those that do come out with me have the same attitude.

As with everything, it is ok if you do it responsibly. Sometimes I dont canter at all on hacks. Occasionally we go specifically for a canter hack. If your horses are fit enough for it and your not cantering on bad ground etc then there is nothing wrong with going for more than one canter on a hack. You know your horses and if they can cope with it.

What annoys me is when people who rarely exercise their horses go out for canter/gallop hacks and come home with horses dripping in sweat and obviously too unfit for what they just did.

my typical and favourite hack, regularly done by me on my 17yr TB x mare, my friend on her 7 yr old mare, my friends daughter on her 11 yr old pony and my other friend on her 17 yr old arab:

Ride out of yard and down lane at walk, trot road, turn onto bridleway and walk till past barn, canter bridleway, ride down lane through yard at walk, canter across field to gate, canter/trot path, jump stream and canter, walk till steep uphill canter, walk or sometimes canter up verge of lane to car park, walk through carpark and school half way home at walk and trot, slow to walk 5 mins from home and Streeeeetch.

I don't think your YO would like me very much but our horses love it. Having said that my old YO was sort of similar, but she had a lot of youngsters at her yard and was strict to ensure we 'met her halfway' that way we didn't over work horses and ensured they were fit to compete, it made us more responsible in the end.

I would ignore the YO and discuss it with your owner to see what their opinion is. My YO tells us all the time that none of us can ride and that we're all too lazy etc - I find it quite amusing to be on his hitlist for the day! Especially considering the fact that there's 25+ horses and only 5 regular riders (myself included)!

Personally, I don't canter very much but tend to do alot of trot work. We do have particular paths where we know it's safe to canter and gallop but we like to change the pace each time we use the paths.

As above as well, it should depend on the ground etc too.

Boo sucks to your YO I say. Hacking out and having a good old safe canter is some of the best fun you and your horse can have! Speaking as someone who used to be terrified of cantering on her own out hacking, me and my ned spent most of late summer thundering up and down stubble fields and across the moors, jumping ditches and spooking at sheep! And my horse isn't ill, injured, knackered or damaged in any way, and I am not a maniac I am a respectable primary teacher! My horse and I have become much more in tune with each other and our mutual trust has improved 100%.
Your YO needs to learn to have FUN!!!!
