Yard and Dogs

Hi all,

I was just wondering about livery yards and dogs. When I was younger and went with a friend to see her horses she used to take her 2 dogs along and they were allowed on the livery yard.

The current yard I am at doesn't allow dogs on it due to the fact the owner has her own dogs, which is fair.

But I was wondering if there are any livery yards that allow you to take your own dogs along?

Do any of your stables allow it?

Thanks for any replies :) Just a ponder on my part, was going to look into liveries that did but wondered if it was a forbidden thing now adays or something :D
 
I allow well behaved, friendly dogs on my yard, and my two Danes would probably kill me if I stopped their friends from visiting!

I have added chicken wire and high fencing to the main area surrounding the yard so that no dogs can get into the fields or the schools. I haven't had any problems yet!
 
My YO has dogs, and mine are welcome to join in with the rabble - I am very lucky ! But my previous yard didn't allow dogs, as the resident dog was very territorial, and it was quite a busy place, and near a main road.

It does make all the difference, and seeing my lab and Shy play footie with a jollyball is a sight for sore eyes ;)
 
we have got 2 collies and 2 jack russels at my yard that live there belonging to the owners.
People can bring dogs to my yard....as long as they are not going to run around and be a hazard.
 
I'm allowed to take my dog to the yard because he's a good boy and runs away from horses and chickens.

Another livery has to keep both of her dogs locked in the car because one of them killed a chicken a few months ago.....

And another is allowed to take one of her dogs out of the car but the others have to stay inside.

So at my livery yard (a very small, private yard really) it depends very much on the individual dog.

I should mention that the YO has an older dog and a 9 month old puppy too
 
:( I don't permit visiting dogs on my yard, it is virtually the only hard and fast rule I have.

It would drive my three (guard) dogs insane, and anyway, I have a bunch of barn cats and some goats that wouldn't appreciate strange dogs on their turf. I don't want to be lumbered with a Vet bill because my cats, or goats, injured a dog.

Much less stressful all round to keep dogs away.
 
Dogs are allowed on our yard unfortunately, its the only thing I don't like about the place, they are an accident waiting to happen, running and barking behind the horses and haring around the school when horses are being ridden. (the owners are usually sat drinking coffee and having a gossip.....)

The yard owner is non horsey so as long as c*** is picked up they aren't worried.

Luckily, we usually manage to get our lot ridden and turned out before the rabble arrive in the evenings.

Please don't tell me I should find a new yard, finding a yard for 6and moving them would be more of a hassle:)

We do have a dog but she is never taken to the yard.
 
Practicly everyone at our yard has dogs and they all get on. Never had a problem apart from when the farriers dog walked under Honey and nearly got squashed but he was old and deaf!
 
Yep - ours does.

YO has 3 and a lot of other peeps (inc me) take their dogs. Considering there are approx 25 horses and can be anything up to 10 dogs, you would think it could chaotic but actually its not. All mutts well behaved and the horses are used to them. Owners all responsible and keep an eye on them - not allowed in school or fields (unless empty - fields that is!) so it actually works well and there is a nice stretch of grass away from the horses where they can have a hoon around.

My dog is a rough collie and very quiet, and it would just be nice to take her with me to see the horsey.

I might have a look around then if there are liveries out there that take dogs, it would make such a difference.

But my dog would stay on a lead and I always clear up after her, so there would be no problems with her running about or making a mess ;)

The YO has 2 dogs that have free roam of the place and although they never pester a horse they poop everywhere and the younger one barks at you to throw a ball which isn't appropriate on a yard.
The YM has 2 dogs and although they are only there while the YM is there the larger collie pees over everything and if left unchecked will try and herd the horses, nipping at heels. I have often shouted at him for it.
You are allowed to take your dogs as long as when your on he yard they are on leads...which is a bit of a cheek when the YM & YO have loose dogs.

There are a group of ladies who take their dogs down and go for a walk together around the fields which annoys me because they are allowed to be lose on the fields but i think that isn't fair for people hacking around them.
No matter how well behaved your dog is on the lead, as soon as it's off, you have no control.

I hate having dogs on the yard YO's or otherwise and would prefer to have them banned.
I'm a dog lover, i have one myself (never taken to the yard) but people seem to forget it's a stables and not a kennels.
It's my number one thing i would change about the yard I'm on.
 
The rule at our yard is that all dogs have to be kept on a lead, the Yard Manager has 4 dogs, 2 of them wander around loose and the other 2 are tied up next to their kennel as they run away.
People normally tie their dogs up outside their stables and then take them out riding with them when they go out.
The only annoying thing about that is that they tie them up on such a long lead that you are permanently tripping over. The woman next to me had her dog tied up on my side of her stable and her dog was always coming in my stable and one day nearly tripped my horse up :(

Funnily enough when I was applying for horse jobs there were loads of people that wouldn't allow me to have a dog. One of the reasons I ended up working for Bar was because she let me have my dog on the yard, he had to be tied up in the tack room but in the afternoon when all the horses were in their stables he could wander about. She had 3 dogs anyway.
 
We're not allowed to take dogs to our yard, but as it's a working farm with cattle and sheep that's understandable. The YO has 2 collies who are well behaved and keep their distance from the horses.

BUT his daughter has a Jack Russell who runs riot, gets in the hay/haylage, poos on the arena and also digs enormous holes in the arena, that p*sses me off big time!
 
Yes my yard allows dog but Benjie rarely makes an appearance due to our puppy getting kicked and dieing :(

A word of warning be careful I would hate for someone to go through what I went through, and it seems unfair cause theres people at our yard who let there dogs just wander around the horses and they never get kicked. Daisy was always on a lead yet she got kicked :(
 
Im allowd to take my dog to my livery yard but they have to be kept on leads, and cleared up after. Loads of people take there dogs but theres no probs as there all under control. When you ride ect they dog has to go back in the car not tied on the yard.
At my work theres 5 grooms but only 2 of us can take our dogs and thats because the mine and the others girls dogs are 10 amd 14 amd are well behaved amd horse trained and clear up after them.
When i used to run a livery yard 10 years ago with my mum only our dogs were there, we had 2 dobermans, (they look like guard dogs) but came home with us and were the biggest softies and 2 terriors for rats and mice. We didnt allow other dogs as no.1 people didnt clear up after them and there was god crap everywhere, and no.2 the male doberman could get funny with other male dogs so we didnt want any fighting. All our dogs were and our horse trained didnt go in the riding school, and very good with people and kids.
I think if a YO or YM wants there dog there but not liveries thats perfectly acceptable as usually its there home.
 
i had my ponies on a yard where there was no rules about dogs, one livery would bring her 3 dogs down and let them loose, they would pee and poop over everything, never got cleaned up either so the hay and straw would have to be thrown.

the other thing she 'allowed' her dogs to do was to jump and snap at the horses who were in the stable, they would do it over the doors. when someone told her dogs off she just replied that they would stop when they are tired and the horses would get used to it anyway. :(
 
Yes there allowed at the yard Im at, it wasn't allowed a few years ago because the YO gaurd dog didnt like other dogs, but then it died and dogs were then allowed as long as they behaved themselves. They can roam around free if the owner can keep it under control and doesnt jump around horses, otherwise it has to be kept on leads, the arena is away from the yard so you dont get the dogs bothering you while you school, plus liveries can take there dogs for a walk in one of the fields as long as its kept on the lead.
 
i allow well behaved dogs, who don't chase my cats, with responsible owners!! to come to the yard. my dogs love to play with their friends. They are not allowed in the hay store, or the fields or the school, and generally are not left unattended. Obviously they come entirely at the owners risk and this is stated to the owners. Also if they are unruly or badly behaved in any way they are politely asked not to come back. its a difficult balance trying to keep everyone happy, and i keep my own dogs shut away in their run if the place is very busy.
 
When I was on yards I wouldn't have considered anywhere that didn't allow dogs.....mainly because I work full time and if I had to leave my dogs at home while I was doing the horses they would have been left alone for too long during the week but my dogs are horse, cattle, cat and chicken safe. I also think that it does no harm for any potentially dodgy people who might be hanging around to see a pack of dogs - they might just put them off.

My pet hate used to be dogs that were on long leads or tied up - so dangerous around horses legs:( .
