I'm on the hunt (i.e., i want to know what to tell mother dearest to get me for xmas) for some wide calf-ed boots that can function as both yard/gumboots/wellies/whatever you want to call them, that aren't going to break in a second. It's 2 days from the start of summer here and its just poured with rain for three days so they get very well used! I've heard really good things about Muckboots, just concerned about calf width. They also need to go up to a 9/10 mens. TIA!!

I also have Windermeres but wouldn't ride in them. OK I have, when I forgot to bring any others, but they aren't ideal - they are too wide and sag downwards, and aren't really long enough for riding - only about mid-calf.

The ariat glaciers, conistons or grasmeres are designed with highly elasticated sides and higher tops, so you can make them snug enough for riding. They are also good for yard work, dog walking and so on.

Not clear in your post but if it's for a man these might not suit - they are rather more feminine. A quick search on ebay of 'country riding boots mens' produces these which look nice:

Ariat windermeres are lovely boots but I personally wouldn't ride in them, ariat grasmeres would be my choice if you wanted yard + riding boots

I've got both Windermeres and Grasmeres. The Grasmeres are better to ride in overall but I've ridden in the Windermeres and found them surprisingly comfortable for hacking at least.

They're also easier if you have to take your boots on and off frequently as you don't have to deal with the laces or use a boot horn. I bought mine half a size bigger and wear with thick socks as I have heels that find it difficult to get in a boot without pulling the lining down. I don't need a boot horn with them but I do the Grasmeres. I have to remember to keep one in my car or at yard otherwise I can't get them on.

Kanyon gorse do wider fit. I hack & do general schooling, not as tall as ariats which is good as only 5'1. Not tried in deep mud but copes ok through puddles
