We're taking on a new yard shortly and will have approximately 16 liveries DIY/Part/Competition plus our own 8 horses. We'll have two full time grooms.
I need to sort out insurance and was hoping that someone in a similar position could recommend an insurance company/broker. Obviously I want to get a good deal but have good cover and a broker who's easy to deal with.

Well - the biggest problem is Employer Liability - I had hellish trouble getting THAT! NFU do it but they pi**ed me about and finally said they'd only do it if I put ALL my insurance (house, cars etc) with them which I was NOT prepared to do.

I now have my Yard insurance with SEIB who are ace. I have Employer Liability, Public Liability, 'Product' liability (which covers you if your clients sue you for non delivery, or their horse getting injured, or whatever), tractors and equiment. Only thing I DON'T have is tack, as I have a timber tack room and no ability to plumb an alarm direct to the local police station (which would be a waste of time in rural Shropshire anyway!)

I would certainly talk to SEIB!

Thanks for this JG - I'll give them a call. I've got a PM suggesting Julie Andrews Brokers - does anyone know anything about them as I've never heard of Julie Andrews before other than the singing nun up a mountain!

we are with NFU and actually find them fab! i think a lot depends upon your local NFU office.
We were originally went thru a broker - but well, its a good job we didnt have a claim when we were with them as we wouldnt have been covered! Basically - it was a new yard, we got the cover to cover the number of boxes we had, we had farrrr too much grass thou so took on some grass liveries, called to add them to the insurance - was told the additional premium to cover them, sent the cheque off, they banked it and we thought no more about it.
Time came for renewal, and the renewal notice was for the original number of horses we had covered, we asked re the extra horses we had added and paid for, and it turns out the broker never told the insurance company that we had added extra horses, paid etc! So, should we have claimed, we wouldnt have been covered as there were too many horses on the premises! needless to say, we didnt renew thru them and we also never did manage to get our money refunded!!! (in hindsight, we should of really chased them for our money back but after numerous letters, calls etc we just wrote it off to a bad experience and were glad we never had to claim in that time!
Hence, i would never use a broker again.

If you have no joy with NFU etc, my friend has her yard with carriage house (?) and has been with them for years.
