I'm designing stables to fit into existing outbuildings. Would you prefer to have larger stables (15ft wide) that come up flush to the end of the building, or 12ft stables which would allow a 3ft wide covered walkway along the outside?
 
I have big ones because they were old farm shed and are 20ft! I love having big ones! So i know if weather is hurendous and they have to stay in i dont feel too guilty! and not only that i have to carry water so when i fill them up i can fill extra and put them in the stables ready for the next day and have the space! I love having a big stable!

12ft and a covered walkway, the overhang will stop most of the rain getting into the stables and you will be able to stay reasonably dry in bad weather :)
 
If they were flush to the building, without the covered walkway would you have an overhang on the roof anyway? If you would I'd be tempted to avoid the walkway - I hate leading horses past the door of other horses if its not really wide. I'd still have 12/13' stables, but with an individual store on each stable - useful if you ever let them out as everyone has a small private store/feedroom, and even if its just for you, itrs handy to have each horses's rugs stored/ room to dry them in the individual stable...
 
No, we wouldn't be able to have a covered bit if the stables were flush with the side of the building.

Its only going to be a small yard (7 stables) with:
11ftx20ft tack room
10ftx20ft feed/storage room
11x20ft straw/hay area (straw is stored long-term in another large barn)
11x20ft covered farrier/clipping/grooming area.
So hopefully individual storage won't be necessary.
 
I would always go for an overhang. Having been on 2 yards that didn't have this, when the rain came from the wrong direction the front of the stables and the horses rugs would be soaked. Having an overhang makes a massive difference.
 
I would go for the walkway I think. We are in a covered barn at the moment and when the weather is fowl, you can just shut it out and carry on with your jobs in side. :D.

The downside of that is when the weather is ok it's nice for horses to see straight outside, would it still be fairly open and well vented if there was a passage way or would you have a door at the top or bottom and that's all?
 
I'll play devil's advocate here and say no over hang unless you are going to have the horses out the majority of the time. That way they get more space and to feel the sunlight on at least their head and necks.

if they'll only be stabled occasionally then go for the walkway for convenience.
 
I would prefer smaller stables with a covered walk way. Would possibly allow the option of placing rug racks outside the stables and allow some storage space.
