Yard dilema! Thoughts?

Need some thoughts please, other than mine & my dads! (we obviously have slightly differing opinions seeing as he pays the livery :p)

Main dilema: Due to some issues YO is having with yard lease owner, livery is now £8-9 per week more than previously, and so £8-9/week more than is 'standard' around here. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds up :(

Obvious solution is to move (there are a few local-ish yards I could try at least) but I really don't want to! For a start, there's the cost & hassle of moving, settling in to a new yard & getting to know everyone again, which as I stress out quite easily & am not the most social/easy going person makes me quite nervous for a while until I'm happy that I know everyone/new rules/how things work & I dislike. I've only just really settled here after 6 months!!
Dante is very happy & settled here, is really growing up and getting on with his work. I also like his stable - seems silly but it's convenient & comfortable, and he has a good view which I think is important as he's often stabled over winter as he's not keen on being out but still gets bored, so I like him to be able to see what's going on :)
It's also very, very convenient for me for college & the railway, which makes transport easy if I have to go a bit further or have no car!
Another upside is that I sometimes get transport to comps & stuff with people on the yard that I know well, and am starting to get on better with some of the other people now :)

I can't really think of many downsides!! A few of the people can be a bit 'odd' but I just ignore them really :rolleyes: there are odd horsey folk everywhere after all :p
Just really not keen on the thought of moving yet again now.... but someone please tell me if I'm being selfish?? :/ Dad hasn't said that we -have- to move Dan, and I am doing my best to find ways to keep costs low generally....

How are you financially? You say your at college so that makes you 17/18 am I right? Why don't you offer to pay the difference in livery price to your dad. Compromise? Or offer him something like washing his car or things on that line....:)

I'm fairly sure that it isn't so much actually affording it that is the issue so much (although obviously £50 a month is £50 a month that could be put towards decorating the house!) more the fact that it is a bit of a silly price for DIY livery.
I'd quite happily pay the difference, but until I can drive, I can't get a job! Money from my artwork already goes elsewhere & I'm already cutting out expenses such as riding lessons & competing. I can't 'save' money myself because I don't really go anywhere/do anything which I could stop, when I need things I look for 2nd hand stuff first or on ebay! I do do my best to save :D
Already offered to help decorating and do the washing/cleaning when needed etc! Hoping things get easier when I can drive really...?
 
One of the biggest invisable costings of DIY these days must be the fuel costs going to and from the yards. Unless you find another yard close enough surely £8/£9 a week will go nowhere if you have to move further afield. Perhaps an angle to put to your folks.

That's true too! And at the min, once I'm driving, my fuel costs at this yard will be only the tiniest bit added on to my home-college run as it's not far away at all :)

A few good thoughts to put to Dad anyway, thanks everyone :)
 
I had a retired horse on DIY which was easily the same amount as your's more than a normal livery yard but for the niceness of the yard, people, etc it was worth it. It did seem silly when if I thought about it I could have kept him much cheaper somewhere else but the hassle would not have been worth it.

Different for me as I was paying for it but all good advice above.

£50 a month??? Extra or as standard? Mine is £90 and that's reasonable here! Excluding hay... :D
 
depends on how much you are paying before the £8/9 increase per week. as you and horse are happy at this yard the main thing that would worry me is the fact that your yard owner is having problems re the yard lease. if the property owner is being difficult then he may well terminate the lease of the property.

If that did happen it isn't such an issue in the short term - I do have stables at home if need be (just v. little turnout & no arena!) so I refuse to worry overly about that, everything seems to have settled now its just the price rise really!
 
If it is DIY livery is there any way you can offer to do jobs for other owners for a small fee, i.e. turnout/bring in, haying, exercising etc etc??

Just a thought
 
I would explain this to your dad, getting a good yard or agistment place is important. I have had some good and bad experiences, it is pretty hard to know what a place is like till you are actually there.

Have my own place now (12 acres) :)

I would not move at this stage, doing extra at home or for the yard owner is a good suggestion, your horse looks noce in the photos.
