Yard dilema - what would you choose??

The yard i am at is fantastic, facilities are second to none (indoor school, dressage arena & my own personal outdoor school) YO & fellow liveries lovely, lovely people, on site professional dressage rider & trainer for lessons, Good turnout, but its expensive at in total nearly £400 a month.

Other yard, no facilities as yet, hoping to go in at some point this year ( slightly

), great turnout, cheap at £200a month!!! Nice lady but no one else there apart from me & her.

Would you stay where you are even though its nearly twice the price, or move to a cheaper, but less facilities yard??
 
It would depend on whether I was struggling to pay the £400 a month. Personally can't afford that so the choice would be made for me! Lol!
If I could afford to stay at the good yard then I would - its worth totting up any extras that you may have to pay for at the cheaper yard, also what about cover for holidays etc and compare (would you really be better off?)
 
The amount of times I've been on a yard and been promised new / imroved facilities, eg a new menage surface, menage lights, lunge arena, hot wash box ..... and have still been waiting a year down the line.
It's tricky one cost v facilities.
 
where you are sounds fantastic, however i would never in a million years pay £400 a month in livery fees (unless i was rich)! But then i would never be able to afford it!!

There must be other places near you with good facilities. Have you tried looking in your local saddler for adverts?

But then if you can afford it, why move? it does sound lovely!!
 
I moved to a cheaper yard last year, that had no facilities. Didn't bother me though as it had good turnout and good hacking. Facilities are getting put up (and they have to do it because they have a grant to turn it from a farm to a livery). So far the stables are and the school is half done. It is nice having cheaper livery, I find I can buy other things for him, and justify it because I'm saving so much on livery. I guess it depends if you rely on the facilities a lot
 
Im paying £60 a week to keep 2 horses at my yard! There we have a large arena, loads of fields, 2 paddocks, a walker and the stables are huge!

There is a x country course coming soon (definitely lol), we can use the horse box anytime, we are close to the beach and the roads are quiet for hacking.

I feel so lucky as the YO couldnt do enough for you and the other liveries are lovely. We help each other out wherever we can. No surprising that the yard is full!!

I was told that if i had another horse and kept it at grass, that it would be free!
 
I would say stay where you are if you can afford it - I moved to a different yard with fewer facilties last year, I managed a whole month there before I moved back to my present yard again. Been there 5 years or so, it bugs the hell out of me sometimes but love the facilities (esp the floodlit outdoor school for weekday riding after work during the winter)

Thats what im nervous of!! I dont want to leave then a year later i still have nothing, and im back where i started.

I can just about afford it, but i will have 0 left after, not that i have anything else to buy, with my dull life LOL!!

Amymay, its for 2 horses, £260 for livery, £60 for hay, approx. £40 for shavings

If you can afford it, then stay where you are. Loads of people will answer your post with how little they pay, and how great their facilities are, but if they are not local to you, then it doesn't help! Horse is happy and you are happy. Not sure what the problem is! Say you move 5 miles further away from your house. Assume 25p per mile and you visit your horse once a day. Another £15 a month. Say you need to hire out better facilities and have to box there once a month. £20 hire, £10 diesel. Now we are up to £45 per month extra. There will be other things to take into consideration for example security of tack and rugs etc in a yard without much security, looking after the horse when you are on holiday, ill etc.

Nope - if you can accord it, then stay put.

I pay more than that and would not consider moving, even though I have had to give up a few things to be able to afford it. Horses for courses as they say. Once you have been used to luxury, you know what you are missing!
 
Hay & straw, well, sorry, its more like £230, but there no facilities, and what if they dont get put in, with 2 projects, i really do need a school!!
 
Good point Fmm, you can hire a school for £3 an hour, id need it 3/4 times a weel, and for 2 hours, that nearly £30 a week!

If there isnt even a school then I wouldnt even consider it - you DEFFO need one!

Remember too that hay will become cheaper soon as the horses will be out more and there will be more grass, and then you wont be using so many shavings either - how about putting down rubber matting then you only need a smidge of shavings anyway

Sounds like you would probably be best staying put, when you consider you have 2 horses and you include the hay and bedding its not so bad. Could you wait until the summer perhaps and see if the facilities materialise on the other yard and decide then?
 
If you're backing a youngster, and have another horse as well, you definitely need a school and good facilities. Stay put.
 
Until the facilities are at the other yard I would stay at current yard. You'll kick yourself if they do not do as promise at the cheaper yard.
 
Our Livery is £112 per per month per horse includes, stable, grazing and use of school, it's £15 a month for as much hay as you like - think you could get somewhere a hell of a lot cheaper that has some facilities already

oh my god £400 a month for DIY ???

God if i did diy it would work out to £250 a month and i have loads of facilities !! thats expensive !!

are there only those 2 yard sin the area ??
 
well it is for two horses, so £200 per month per horse at the more expensive one.
