We appear to have an issue at our yard. Member of staff left a piece of YO's tack in the school, not sure how long ago but it has since been found broken. It's a long dark item that if left on the surface could have blended in very well.

When arriving at the yard yesterday there was a note left saying whom ever had used said item of tack and broken it had "better" replace it .....

A discussion was then held with YO who said someone had used it and broken it so YO wouldn't help any of the diy's any longer with turnouts etc it would now be DIY only as they were offended that no one would admit to using and breaking said piece of tack.

I have not used said piece of tack as its not my thing and I know another liverie has not used it as we often school together. I'm cross as being accused of breaking something and then lying about it. I was brought up if you want something you save and buy it or ask the person direct face to face may you borrow, clean and return it.

There are other yards about just as nice as current yard, I don't really want to move but now YO is refusing to help us, member of staff is grunting at us and standing staring across the yard clearly taking to other staff about the issue.

I know I can only talk with my feet as so to speak but what your opinion ? Also dear old Facebook has also had a few comments about the matter from member of staff.

My opinion is that your YO is fed up of not just that, but is using this as the impetus for a wide range of issues, sounds like the proverbial "last straw". Noone in their right mind behaves like that over one piece of equipment - there is one heck of a lot behind this.

If she can't communicate openly about little issues and explodes by sulking and punishing everyone and taking them by surpsise, as indeed, you have been, you should leave and take your custom elsewhere.

I got no time for diva YO's but plenty of time (and money) for the ones who communicate openly and effectively without punishing the world around them

This is my guess!;)

What a fuss, the staff member is at fault here they left the item in a place where it may just have been broken by a horse treading on it, possibly picked up by anyone and used without thinking of who it belonged to. If they dont want things used they need to take better care of them in the first place.
You dont say what it was but if leather it could even have broken without being used as such.

Speak to YO - tell her the current situation is making you feel very uncomfortable. Hint at the fact that it is making you so uncomfortable you might have to leave! Tell her in no uncertain terms that YOU did not borrow this tack - don't stick up for the other DIY livery though because if she did borrow it, it could come back and bite you on the arse!

I think I might also speak to whoever you do think borrowed it and tell them to fess up!

I'd try & speak to her myself first, & make a decision based on her attitude. Not v professional but everyone has bad days, could be she's now regretting it & a quick chat could put it all right. Or she could reveal herself to be a nutter in which case move. Not sure what you mean by not helping diys tho? Surely that would reduce her income?

I don't actually think anyone has used the item, I think it's been left on the school floor and damaged. A long leather/rope item or part of it caught under the jump wings and the other half left trailing for horses to stand on it.

Yo has been great until this moment, will store hay for free, turn out for free if stuck but I have never asked, feeds everything in the morn and will take a sheet off if horse gets too hot during the day.

I'd have a chat. If she helps out for free & somethings been broken it could just be the last straw & she has just had enough & perhaps she'd like the chance to tell you so

If she is usually a good YO, perhaps as someone else said, this might be the straw that broke the camels back and she's feeling a bit used and abused, which is understandable as being a YO is sometimes a thankless task.

Its up to you, whether you leave or not, but maybe give her a few days to calm down, keep your head down and don't join in with liveries criticising her. She's human too and sometimes we all need to know we're appreciated.

A wonderful YO I once had, had a thing about tidy muck heaps. If liveries let the muck sprawl towards the path, once in a blue moon,he'd flip, go on the rampage and threaten to boot offenders off the yard.
So we used to make the heap extra neat, keep quiet and wait for him to return to his lovely self again.

I appreciate it might have been the straw that broke the camels back but I'm quite offened to have been accused of taking it and then lying. I never ask for the Yo to turn my horse out, I sweep the whole yard most days, tack room, feed room and clear around the edge of the yard.

I agree give it a few days but I think deep down I want an apology which I don't think I will get ......

Totally understand that you feel offended. Do you think the YO suspects it was you ?
If so, then perhaps you might feel better moving as the trust between you and her has been damaged.

If the accusation was a general one to all liveries, then its a bit different, while not nice, its easier to shrug your shoulders and carry on.

Suppose the bottom line is, if you are so offended that staying will make you miserable, then I'd leave and hopefully find a yard that has the facilities you want for you and your horse.

I would speak to the member of staff that has broken the said equipment and ask her/him why she/he has a) not confessed to leaving it lying around and b) why she/he has let you/other liveries take the blame for something she/he has done..

It seems to me that the member of staff has passed the buck and in which case i would be more pee'd off with staff than the owner who might have told you lot are responsible.

Hmmm I don't think the yo suspects it was me as I didn't get most of the grief, but yo just doesn't seem to see the point that they were left in a school for how ever long, what if they had wrapped around a horses legs and caused an accident ... Would yo be so quick in shouting it was their piece of tack.

Yo has assumed someone used them and broke them not their member of staff left them there and they some how got broken, you could say things don't just get broken but if they have been laying on a surface for a week and more with upto five horses a day going over the top of them then I do think they could have got broken.

The leather doesn't appear to have stretching it looks like a human bite which sound silly but that's all I can describe it as.

Sounds the same as others have said... final straw on the camels back... perhaps some appreciation of all she does would do some help? however if she's punishing the horses basic welfare you go.

Doesn’t sound like it’s aimed at you personally so I wouldn’t be too offended. Using the scatter gun approach rather than having a quiet word in the correct ear is not unheard of where I am. Tbh I’d be more concerned at their lack of remorse, something like that lying could have bought a horse down with awful consequences for both horse and rider.

If the damage looks like a human bite maybe an animal bit it and dragged it in the school? I am forever finding grooming brushes, which I have left out on the yard, scattered around my manege and yard with bite marks. At my place its the foxes who seem to enjoy using my kit as playthings :D

Isn't this ALL a bit over the top?

Do you really need YO's help, or are you mostly managing fine as DIY? If you are, then just ignore and go about your business, and share jobs with other liveries if you need to. I personally don't think its worth moving yards over. In a few weeks it'll all be forgotten anyway.

How long was it left in the school?! Surely anybody who was riding in the school and who noticed it would pick it up, in order to avoid an injury?!

I don't just walk past a rope lying on the floor that I think would trip a person or horse up, no matter if it was me who left it there or someone else. Whole scenario seems bizarre to me.

I don't know how long it was in the school for ..... I had only been in there once last week and I didn't notice it but I don't tend to ride looking at the floor.
