Just a ponder - what sanitisers, if any, are yards using for things such as tack room door handles/feed room doors, light switches etc or are most yards just leaving it to individuals to sanitise their hands on arrival at the yard? What about for things like barrows or other equipment, even if in theory not shared? Does anyone have a yard where face coverings are required in any areas?

Im on a yard that only does full livery, but we’re being asked to wear gloves/sanitise hands if touching any shared equipment (field gates, head collars, stable doors etc) and to wear face masks at all times on the yard.

I’m staying away from the yard as a result as I can’t find a face mask that doesn’t fog up my glasses and am pretty much blind without them.

We're DIY and YO has just had 2 positive tests in her house. They provided a sink with hot water, antibac soap and something to dry our hands on and we're meant to do that on arrival and exit, not congregate in the tea room, not use each other's tools and ride out if small so able to be distanced groups or in the school.

Now they have tested positive we have to wear masks at all times and do the above.

They're also going to let us know when they're doing their horses so that we keep out of their way / off the yard. Gave us 10 minutes this morning.

Our yard has sanitizer and disinfectant spray at the gate, the entry to tack room (which is also feed room) entry to arena, and in all stable blocks. Everyone has their own tools and must spray doors and tools after use.

I bought some of this back in March and we use it on everything, tools, headcollars, hands, surfaces. Even have given the horse or cat a quick wipe over. Plus at home for post and supermarket deliveries.
I bought the 5 l concentrate so had enough to mix up 200l but that doesn't seem to be in stock now. It is exactly the same as they sell in small bottles as hand sanitiser, so suitable for hands as well as surfaces, plus because it's designed for horse use I'm happy to use it on the tap etc and not worry about rinsing which I would be with a bleach spray (I do a quick rinse if used on feed/water buckets)

hi i don't know how many livery vs how many yard owners horses, i would suggest you might want to do their horses for a bit and they self isolate?

God I really wouldn't be happy with this at all. They shouldn't be leaving their house and should make other arrangements for their horses. Not ok.

We have put handwash/sanitisers in places that are likely to be touched, eg taps, door handles etc. When a livery needs to isolate, we take over care of the horse while they do so. In return, they can take on more care post-isolation/at another point if necessary.

We have sanitiser dotted about and disinfectant sprays next to taps and such like. It is up to the individual though to use it and to sanitise their hands too.

I would think they have to be quite careful liability / insurance wise. If they continue to come onto the yard with known infection and one of their liveries catches it and got really ill (or even just had to isolate and lost income), there would be a reasonable argument that the yard owner is responsible.

I fear we will spend the next 10 years with the old PPI law firms / ambulance chasers running around for legal claims against businesses that didn't follow the rules to the letter. Whether you agree with the suing culture or not - it does happen and as a YO they should be concerned about the risk.

I've offered help, they have 1 shitland, 1 pony, 9 horses, 1 mini on assisted DIY that they do morning for and another horse on assisted / part (owners don't always turn up). I work full time (Wfh and in the office as we're classed as an essential manufacturing site - we make skincare but put a large part of our business making antibac products last year), and have 2 horses - apparently I'm the only livery that's offered any help. 1 of their helpers was really ill the other week, 2 negative tests but is now going for antibody test as her doctor thinks she may have had it anyway ? !!

I'd rather slog my guts out for a few weeks so they stay in their bloody house and don't infect us.

She sent us a text yesterday saying she's sure they picked it up from us on the yard, and so we all had to be careful with space / cleaning etc. I sanitise hands on arrival and exit and have only been using my own tools for ever. I'm struggling not to mention the 2 people they've had riding their horses having lessons, the 3 people they have come in to ride and help muck out etc, the fact that the 1 person on assisted diy uses their feed room and is still out socialising. I'm so fed up at the moment it's untrue. Meanwhile texts from YO getting more accusatory and annoyed. Yes I get she's peed she has to do all her horses herself but stop slinging her annoyance at us, I had no idea she was so passive aggressive.

I'm on a private yard. Owners 2 horses. 3 liveries. I'm the only full DIY. All the others get assistance/help. No handwashing facility. No sanitiser. No masks worn. And naff all personal distancing. I wear gloves all the time, only use my own stuff, and back off out of other people's space. (get a very snarky look from YO when I do this). I can only think the YO and family assume they are immune to this virus. I despair.

Large DIY yard. Sanitiser at the gate and disinfectant washes, one for hands and one for objects, by the tap. Constantly checked and replenished by myself. Everyone says they're using it, but it's not going down as fast as I'd expect so I keep reminding ... People wear masks if more than 4-5 people around at the same time, but everyone has been really good about minimising their time on site, no hangout out etc. Assistance is provided and those grooms are there at set times and other liveries are encouraged not to attend during that timeframe as there will be fewer available tie spaces, etc, on the yard so not as easy to socially distance. So far, people have been really good.

March last year the yard put up automatic sanitiser dispensers a round the yard and at the key pad.

Now we have been asked to wear masks at all times in the barns, only one person in the tack rooms at a time, we have five so it's not really a bother.

Not to touch anyone else's horses unless we are their designated extra carer. All horses to have care plans written up and stored in their grooming boxes.

We are a DIY yard with about 35 horses on so the yard doenst want to have to take over the care so we are all making sure we stick to the rules.

Oh and the yard has put out sanitiser spray thingy to use on the tools morning and night.
Most of us have our own but there are some who use the communal ones.
They have said we can spray down what we use as well.

We have hand sanitising stations as you enter the yard, outside the tackroom and outside the arena. Everyone must sanitise hands before coming onto the yard and when leaving the tackroom and leaving the arena. Masks have to be worn at all times (except when riding). No entry to feed room or hay store (it's full livery). One person at a time in tackroom. Canteen is closed for now. Don't touch anyone else's tack, equipment or rugs. If you use a yard brush or poo scoop, wear gloves or sanitise hands before and after. Anybody feeling ill or with suspected covid must not come to yard until tested negative. A couple of care workers at our yard have had covid but obviously they stayed away and kept YO updated (both fine now though).

We don't really have that many common touch points- whoever gets to the yard first in the morning/evening opens up the tack rooms, and then the last person to leave locks them. There's one gate into the car park, but there is alternative parking which means you can avoid touching it. We all have our own tools etc.

We do have handwashing facilities on site, including hot water.

Only one person at a time in the tack room, 2 in the feed room, 3 in the larger barn, and masks to be worn in all enclosed areas. We're also meant to stick to social distancing as much as possible, and no extra guests up on the yard.

ETA: and obviously no-one to come to the yard with symptoms or if they are isolating.

Sounds like a difficult situation! I agree with others that they absolutely should not be going onto the yard and should arrange paid cover if needed.

The YO at a friends yard has had a positive test and has stayed in the house, she was going to send her husband out to do her horses but the liveries requested he didn't and cover was arranged - luckily as the husband then came down with it too.

Additionally, in your situation if one of their helpers had symptoms they should have isolated for 10 days regardless of the negative tests. On our yard one girl was sent home from work as started coughing, she tested negative but the rules are still to self isolate if you have symptoms so none of her family can come up either - we again have arranged cover between ourselves.

Now all trying to stick to separate times and masks on anytime someone else is on the yard, even if not going near them. Anything can happen in a second with horses and suddenly you might need to go and help someone with a loose horse, an accident etc. and get closer than 2m. For that reason I'm wearing a mask out when riding too.

On a very small yard and there are never more than two of us there at once. We avoid being in all indoor spaces (feed room, tack room) at the same time, use separate tools and have taken to leaving certain doors and gates open so that we don't have to touch.

There is the YO and three liveries and one of the other liveries has been dealing with Covid positive patients so we agreed she should stay away and we are doing her horse between us.

Sanitiser and washing facilities are available but to be honest, it's been so damn cold most of us just keep our gloves on all the time. In the summer we were wearing latex gloves whenever possible.

None of us wear masks but I don't think there would be an issue if we decided it was important to.
