Hi

I’m hoping someone can give me some advice on lighting a yard when there’s no mains electric. Does anyone have experience of this and what has worked best for you?

We have two stables with an adjoining tack room and a separate shipping container which is used as a feedstore. We are privately renting this yard, unfortunately getting electric installed is not an option. We are willing to spend some money on providing a solution which would work rather than trying a cheap and cheerful solution which doesn’t provide any light.

Any ideas gratefully received. Thank you.

I suppose we'd really like to know if that's the only viable option, not sure if solar powered systems are any good. They do market some which are supposed to be suitable for sheds / stables etc but i can't see them being man enough. Anyone got experience of solar power?

I had a yard with light run by a genny and can honestly say never again! When you're mucking out in winter and it's pitch black outside and the genny decides to break (not ran out of fuel, but something else gone wrong!) and you're all on your own finding your way about with torches it is not ammusing!

I used a generator for the last 2 winters and it was fantastic - have just written an enormous cheque to the electricity board for mains electric.......ouch!

You do need a decent genny tho - get the best you can afford and remember to change the filters regularly!

Good luck!

I have a block of 3 stables and feedroom. They have had small flourescent tube lighting fitted in each stable and the feedroom. They are all wired into a pair of clips that attach to a car battery. The lights work really well you wouldn't know they weren't off the mains TBH and I'm just considering buying a small solar panel charger to keep the car battery topped up so it doesn't need taking home to charge very often. Generators tend to be very noisy and nickable!

we used battery powered lights in two stables and tack room - worked quite well, just had to remember to keep a battery charged, and not leave lights switched on.
