I'm moving house soon to a nice place with a yard and a fair bit of land and been offered the option to buy their existing quad bike for yard maintenance. Up until now, I've always used my 4x4 to everything around my current house and yard - harrowing, moving haylage etc. and never had any problems with it. The only difference is that there is a menage at the new house and comes with a leveller but feel reasonably sure I could use the 4x4 for levelling, as have done so before.

What are the advantages of having a quad bike versus a 4x4? Not sure if it would be a bit superfluous given we already have a 4x4. Any thoughts? Ideally I'd have a small tractor but think that will have to wait for a bit!

I do pretty much everything with my Nissan X-Trail, and tbh, the only thing I miss is a PTO shaft, lol and maybe a front loader, but I don't think you can get one of those on a quad anyway :)

Quad everytime. Cheaper to run.

Nippier. Lighter on the land. Our 400 will move a horse trailer from place to place, haul logs, muck, harrow, roll, pull hay about. I wouldn't be without a quad, or maybe a gator. Colder yes, but layers are great things.

Oh, and it ploughs snow too :) and pulls kids (big and small) on toboggans in the snow, and skates on ice.

Quad... Ive got both, quad is not working at the moment and I really miss it, they are SOO handy, Ive got a smallish trailer for the back of mine, and handy for carrying feeds, bales, fencing etc.....

Also in the quad camp.

Mine does everything from rolling and harrowing, to towing the muck trailer, and used to transport winter feed and hay around the fields.

I have a 4 x 4 but it is not as nippy and can't get into the corners of the school to level. It would also churn up the land in winter whereas the quad hardly leaves a mark.

Another Quad vote..If it is Agricultural reg'd there is no tax and no mot required..

The dust and sand will be for ever getting in your UJ's and clogging up your air filters on your 4x4..

I top (topper with a 2,5hp engine),harrow, roll, spray and level with my quad..

Another vote for a quad BUT make sure it's not a poor quality & low power engine, It has to have sufficient power to do the jobs. I was once at a yard that had a quad but it had insufficient power to do anything really. It was more a toy than a workhorse.

I don't have a quad and tbh have no need of one. I think if you have just a little bit of land then quads are probably more use for zipping around the place to do odd jobs. I have a pretty big farm and we have 2 Jeep Wranglers; one holds most of the fencing tools and odd-job type tools, the other is used for manoeuvring hay wagons and machinery about the farm. We also have 2 honking great pickup trucks and a Landrover Discovery. The trucks haul the hay and the horse trailers and snow plow etc. The Landrover is barely used on our farm so am thinking about getting rid of it tbh. The tractors do most of the work on our farm though. I usually use the big tractor for harrowing and rolling the arenas but the Jeeps or small tractor would do the job equally as well.

Once upon a time I thought we should have a quad so I borrowed one for a month or so as a friend was heading out of town for a while but I have to say apart from the first few days bombing around on it and having fun, I never used it much for the rest of the time it was here. I think everyone probably gets into their own groove though as my next door neighbour uses her quad all the time and for everything! I just can't see one as being a whole load of use to me.

Another quad voter.

I have a 6 wheeler, it has a trolley on the back and is used more than my 4 x 4! It carries the muck and as long as the muck heap is built correctly, means you can reverse it right to the top. Carries hay and feed to the fields, fencing stuff, takes the bins up the drive for the dustmen and easy to throw a dead sheep in the back!

Depends on how much the sellers are asking for the quad bike? If its cheap enough to resell without being hit with a loss if you find it's superfluous, then go ahead and buy it - they keep their value pretty well!
