Yard manager telling me lies. WWYD?

On the lid write the date you opened it, calculate how many doses in the tub there are, and then you should know when the tub should be finished by. Upto you if you want to write the end date on it too or just mark it down somewhere so around that date, you check the tub and then ask the YM if there is a lot left as then you have some evidence to non feeding.

Just means you have to wait a while to get the 'evidence' but you may find that writing the date on the lid makes the YM realises that you are keeping an eye on rate of use and starts giving the supplement as he is suppose to.

Make up the feeds yourself. When I went on holiday and my parents were doing the horse I saved up all my supplement tubs and mad up feeds dry that all my parents had to do was add beetpulp to and feed.

The YO shouldnt question this but if he does then i would say that the supplement isnt being fed enough as the pot isnt emptying as it should so by you doing it your daving him time and making sure its right. He shouldnt have a problem with this.

If he does then walk.

I know and I kind of have but I've asked him directly and he says he's feeding it. So I'd basically be calling him a liar.

And your problem with calling a liar a liar is?

The problem you have come to the forum with is.... You pay a man, presumably several hundred pounds a month (on full livery), thousands of pounds a year of your hard earned cash, to care for your horse who has a health problem. He is doing everything for your horse to your satisfaction, apart from one of the most important things -caring for the health problem. You are paying this man thousands of pounds a year to do this and he is lying to your face. Your horses health is, according to you, suffering/not improving as a result of this man not doing his job.

Read the above several times and get angry on your horses behalf.

Bloody well said. Stop being a wet blanket and get him told. Otherwise you are just as bad as he for saying nothing

How ridiculous - you must move yards a lot if you speak to YO/YM with that attitude.

I have to say regrettably I've never met a completely trustworthy YO and you always have to tiptoe around in case you upset them because they always come out with "If you don't like it leave".

I've always had problems with supplements. At one yard I bought my own bag of chaff and mixed his supplements in myself and gave a small extra feed. On days I wasn't there a friend gave them to him for me. I've even found medications not given such as antibiotics so when he was on these I checked every day.

People say move but I can see why you don't because the likelihood is that the next yard will have different issues and maybe this one is an issue that you can live with.

Better make sure you have a plan B for getting the horse at place to live if this approach goes wrong as it might well end with a move.

Whoever said about not meeting a trustworthy YO has a point - not that there are no "trustworthy" YO's, but that every YO is going to run THEIR yard they way they like to, and therefore you're always going to have to work with them to a degree as long as you are a livery without your own land. For example, my YO is the best intentioned in the world, but she does things that bug me, like changing my horse's feed (she likes to feed him less chaff than I do as he is a slow eater, and she feeds them all in the field: it saves her time) so I combat this by giving him an extra feed after I've ridden him. She also doesn;t believe in supplements, but she does feed them for me (as I always say to her, you feed an RB, my supplements do the same job but he's on higher calorie feeds!).

So have a chat with your YO (not a confrontation) regarding the supplement, and make it plain you aren't angry, and that you want to make it easier for him. Maybe say that the tub is lasting longer than it should, and ask if he is maybe forgetting to add the supplement sometimes - say that you don't blame him, espesh if there are lots of different supplements for lots of different horses, but is there any way you could make it easier to remember for him? Suggest to him about the pots of supplement etc, if that would make it easier for him. That way you are addressing the issue without forcing a "like it or leave" scenario. Yes, you are paying for livery and should get what you want and need. However it is his yard, and if he sees you as a hassle of a livery (which attitude is more of an issue than the need for supplement, hence why I say to handle it delicately!) then why should he have you on his property?

So handle it gently, and hopefully you will have a YO who is more on your side. Because it does sound like you want to stay, and there is no such thing as a perfect livery yard - only ones whose problems you can work around!

Do you want this supplement fed by vet's order? If so ask vet to talk to YO/YM it might help though I have met a few YO/YM who were not the slightest impressed by a vet's order.

Disagree with the above. Your YO is not god. You're paying him for something and he's not doing it. He's walking all over you, and people only walk all over you if you let them.

In any other walk of life would you pay someone to do something, then when they failed to do it just say 'oh well, I don't want to upset him so ill just keep my mouth shut and keep the cheques coming'????

It really does sadden me when people say they've never met a trustworthy YO, but I can understand the sentiment. Luckily OH then opened his own yard.

I think people need to differentiate between:

(a) YOs who do things their own way (hopefully they will be very experienced!) which might not be your way, and

(b) YOs who lie.

In the case of (a), YOs aren't mind readers and if you have a chat with them and ask whether it would be possible to do things your way with your horse, they have a few options. Either they say yes and give it a try (it might not work/ last but at least they're giving it a try - perhaps agree to touch base after a couple of weeks and find out how it's going) or they say no because [insert good reason eg too expensive, doesn't work with their land management] and/or perhaps find a compromise, or they say no, it's my way or the highway. Whichever way, you know where you stand and can decide if it's something you can live with. Complaining to fellow liveries/ forumites/ your partner etc doesn't work as the only person who can change their behaviour is the YO.

In the case of (b), I'm afraid I'd move yard every time. If a YO is lying to me about one thing and I can prove it, what else aren't they telling me. An example is when I found out that my horses weren't coming in - apparently I was wrong and the groom was replacing the small step I'd left in the middle of the bed after mucking out every day(!) and then after that discussion, I was told by a groom that the YO had instructed her to move the bed and turn the haynet around every day so if I checked it looked as though the horse had been in the stable. How could I trust anything else they said?

Im sorry, but if you want YOUR horse to have a supplement that YOU pay for, then its got ****** all to do with YO/YM . I would be 100% outright in saying I want my horse to have this every feed thanks, if you have any issues with this please tell me now.
