Yard Owner gone mad? Advice pls!

[/ QUOTE ]
I have seen countless people who gave notice that they were leaving in a month be told to get out there and then....I've seen them left standing outside the gates, holding their horse and phoning to get someone to pick them up - these were good liveries whose only 'crime' was wanting to leave.
I have never left with anything other than my own possessions, I leave a month's livery pay in lieu of notice, and I clean everything I have used.
But why should I risk some unprofessional fool turning my horses onto the road?
I agree this doesn't apply to all yards...the one I'm at just now is fairly professional, and a while ago I kept my horse at a very good yard up north.
But I think you'll find it is not uncommon for YO to behave like spoilt brats the minute you tell them you're going....

Very well said. There are exceptions but IME they're in the minority. Most YOs are mad, awkward and wouldn't last five minutes running a buisness in any other industry. Are you in the North West by any chance??!!

My current YO's spat their dummies out when I gave them notice. Fortunately it didn't involve chucking me out early.

It has involved them complete twonks with other liveries who I'm friends with.

However, today they seemed to have realised that they are heading towards emptying their yard pretty quick if they carry on the way they are.

I'm moving to a yard where the YO seems pretty normal and nice - I thought that when moving to this one though, so time will tell.

The quote: 'Oh, and never, ever give a yard notice - YOs are all as unprofessional as hell' - Shilasdair

Bit of a sweeping statement there and a little unfair. I have been a livery customer and have experienced this a bit at various yards. Now as a YO, I absolutely strive to be as professional as possible and make the service very clear to customers. If everyone failed to give notice, YO's would end up feeling they had to take 4 weeks deposit in advance to safeguard their income but who wants that!!!!

Perhaps rather than demanding deposits etc, you could have a fair contract (not one which sets out rules for them, and denies responsibility for anything for you) which specifies notice period, and then you should honour it. That way if a livery leaves suddenly they are legally obliged to pay you for the notice period.
IMO it is about time that yards became more professional in managing their customer services.

I agree with all the comments about YO's throwing toys out the pram when giving notice. It is so short sighted as people leave for different reasons and may want to come back, also how can they recommend what might be a really nice yard after an experience like that.

i would demand your tack back.
i would also take your horse BEFORE you tackle her or she could try to stop you taking it or worse.
she sounds like a nut job and i would hate to leave my horse with her!she sounds really spiteful and what shes done is downright weird-you explained the payment and have actually paid her!
i would also ask for reciepts for all your livery bills so you can claim the tax back off them and see what she has to say about that!!!LOL.

ive been at good and bad places.some i happily gave a months notice.others i ran off asap and then paid up once my horse was safely out of there.had one personthreatened to throw my foal on the road if i didnt pay cash within the hour!!!(and i had paid cheque and been bang on time with all other payments before)

I seem to remember there was a lot of fuss a while ago about illegal parking; people parking their cars on private property; firm's car parks and the like- because they didn't want to pay for parking. Someone had started wheelclamping them, or locking them in' and although I would have said they deserved it, he was found to be in default of the law because he was depriving them of the legitimate use and enjoyment of something that was theirs; I remember it being said that this was technically theft, even though there was no question of him keeping the vehicles; he just wanted to inconvenience the owners.

So if the YO is doing this to you by withholding your tack, surely what she is doing is illegal?

Would the Citizens Rights Bureau be able to advise you?
(Maybe someone else mentioned this?)
