WWYD, I have serious issues with confidence, recently sold a horse after some nasty falls , bought a confidence giving horse who is a total sweetie and apart from a terrible first ride( my fault ) she hasn't put a foot wrong. Well my confidence is worse than ever so I've decide to get a specialist instructor to help with my confidence. My problem is my yard owner used to teach me & I've asked if its ok to get someone else in & she hasn't replied. Do I just get the instructor in or should I wait to get the ok from my YO. I really want it to work with this horse as I think she is the perfect horse for me but it won't work if I don't get te right help. X

You really need to wait to hear from your YO out of courtesy - try ringing her or call in and see her. You will be able to explain why you think this new instructor will be good for you, and in theory it should be harder for her to say no face to face :). Texting is not the best way to tackle a potentially difficult conversation. Good luck hope it works out for you :)

I cant see any reason why she would have an issue of you seeking out professional help, all you have to remember is that this is for your benefit, not hers. In the long run, being there before myself it is best to have an outsiders help, because over time it can interfere with your relationship.

Get a new instructor in - your YO may be a little miffed but this is about you and your confidence - getting a stranger in is beneficial as they they dont know you or your horse, and have no emotional link like your YO does with you and your horse.

They will be more inclined to tell you straight what you are doing right/wrong and advise you.

Speak to your YO explain what you have on this thread - that you think you need extra tuition to help your confidence - i think really she/he will understand xxxx

What are the yard rules? If it is generally ok to fet your own instructor in then go ahead but tell YO no offence you just felt you needed another perspective. A good instructor should understand thst there is benefit to being taught by different people and understand their own skills and limitations.

Beware though that some yards have rules to stop you bringing outside instructors in and if yours is one of these you need permission.

Thanks for all your replies , there are no set rules regarding instructors I just thought it was courteous to ask. My YO is a good teacher but I don't think she understands nervous riders , I really want a fresh start with this new horse & I think this instructor can help. I will try to talk to YO tommorow & explain the situation x:o
