We've (family) got a small yard in Leicestershire which is rented out to a lovely tenant and we arrange the insurance for it. For the last 12-odd years it's been with one well-respected company, but the premiums (surprise!) have rocketed this time, despite never having made a claim.

Anyhoo, brother got a quote from another well-respected company which came out quite a bit cheaper for seemingly identical cover. Until he read the small-print, which excluded electrical faults. When he rang to query this, he found out that this means consequential damage, so if a fire started because of a dodgy kettle and burned the stables down, we would not be covered.

Just thought I'd pass this along incase anyone else is looking to change policies on their yards...

So what are they covering?

Surely that sort of insurcance is to cover things that happen as a consequence of other things happening...

Quite. It makes you wonder what else you're missing in the small-print:

"We'll insure your horse for vet bills, as long as it doesn't become ill"...

Maybe they should be called unsurance policies :(

we looked into several companies when we were insuring our yard, and we had to discount one or two because they would not cover the barns where hay and bedding were stored. Hmmmmmmmmmmm now what is likely to burn down - oh yes the barn with the hay and bedding in it! So we went with NFU, checked the policy and were covered for everything we wanted including the ability to increase and decrease the cover depending on time of year and the amount of bedding and haylage we have stored at any one time. Our electrics had to have a certificate from the electrician.
