Yard Owners. Your turn. Gripes about liveries.

Quote I'm the only one that rakes the yard and leaves it nice and tidy. In my book you should take pride in your yard wether you own it or not and always clean up after yourself. I find it satisfying to leave it all nicely raked with no bits of straw or shavings littered about. I go down at night after work and it looks like I've not touched it! ...

me too! and the only one that poo picks or sweeps up or goes looking for ragwort or cleans the water troughs or in fact does anything at all!

QR: I don't beleive any statements on this thread are meant to be patronising from YO, but what this thread does is to give all the opportunity to hear from the YO'ers point of view. Most YO'ers on here seem to work damn hard and truly care for the horses in their charge, and in the main, most relationships with liveries are sound.
However, when you are working all the hours and then start having to clear up/chase etc after people as they do not respect your property - that's when it starts to grate!
I have to agree that the diffiult liveries I have had in the past have all been on DIY. It never ceases to amaze me what people want for a relatively small amount of money per week, yet will rarely return their side of the contract. Thank god I got rid of those people!
The liveries now left are a fab bunch (although they still do things to annoy....!!) and I'd like to think we have a friendly and supporting environment there now.

You have a lot of strong opinions and as a YO you are perfectly entitled to decide what type of service you provide and to be honest if that is explained clearly to your liveries in their contract then they cant argue.

I must admit if I were at a yard where the closure dates were not specifically written into my contract I would be one livery who would be furious. I cant see any need to alarm and lock the gates because you are going to hospital, particularly when it is clear your 'customers' are not happy unless you are trying to antagonise them.

However....horses like routine and its disruptions to their routine they dont like. They certainly dont get stressed if one gets fed at a different time to another providing that is what they expect.

There are some DIY's that get neglected by their owners and that is appauling but in my experience there I have lost count of the number of times a new Full Livery is forgotten and left becasue the YO has neglected to tell the staff that is it there.

My DIY horses get better and more personal care than my YO could ever provide. That is why they are DIY.
