Most days we have the radio playing, mainly when mucking out and often left on through the day. I always thought it was nice and comforting especially on the quiet days and thought the horses didn't mind it either/kept them company when in stables too :). We always have it quite quiet and on more mellow channels (Magic/Heart).
But we had a new livery at the yard who reacted very differently, thinking it must drive the horses mad and wasn't a good idea?..
Anyone else like or dislike radio at yard? Should we not have it on when horses are in?

Mine always have a radio on from when they come in until bedtime. They seems happy enough with that. Turned off over night. In fact I just bought them a DAB radio!

I have the radio on at my yard and it is on in the barn where I work. The horses don't seem to mind.

I draw the line at Radio 1 though, it drives me nuts so can only imagine what it would do to the horses.

I think it depends on the music being played and the volume. Sometimes I get to the yard and it's on really loud so it drives me mad let alone the horses.

I think the radio could be calming for the horses providing it's not on too loud and iit's relaxing music rather than club type.

Our 7 month old is unfortunately on box rest and is better with the radio left on!

It gives her something to listen to and the other noises in the yard then don't seem to bother her so much. To be fair to her, she does prefer some stations to others, more music, less talk and its been helpful to get her to settle - she's not had a simple life.

We leave it on during the day and turn it off in the evening.

We have the radio on all day and sometimes over night if fireworks are going off. We find it settles the horses, my girl is in all the time and during the day she's normally on her own, if the radio gets switched off she starts box walking and calling!

I like the idea of having the radio on for them, we like listening to the radio so why shouldn't the horses. Unless its clear they dont like it.

radio is on most of the time. Horses don't seem to care either way. Do they stop broadcasting at a certain time though as it's sometimes left on all night and i think white noise would be very annoying after several hours. I sometimes turn it off for a bit, i like some quiet time and i think horses do too.

Just be aware that you are supposed to have a license to play music (including the radio) in places of business or a public place - don't fall foul of this law - I have heard of small businesses getting into trouble for this and a yard would count, I think. :( This from the PRS website:

'... in a workplace or public area you may require a MUSIC licence. This is totally unrelated to the radio licence of the past and the TV licence of today.

Any location or premises, outside of home, where music is played from clubs to concert halls, from discos to dentists’ waiting rooms and from trains to takeaways needs a PRSforMUSIC Licence for the public performance of copyright music.'

thanks for the warning!!!

Isnt this just a prime example for how bloody ridiculous things have become?!?

fwiw i dont have it on around the horses. there is one livery who absolutely cannot stand it and to be honest its not worth the hassle, i dont mind either way. once they are out in the field and im mucking out i have my ipod on, makes that part go quicker!

I don't really like the radio on in the yard, I worry that someone might be calling for help and I wont hear them! But if I'm by myself I might put it on while mucking out or cleaning tack. Used to work with a girl who had kiss radio on all bloody day, drove me nuts!

The manager at my yard looked into that, as far as I can remember it only applied if he played music, but liveries can have a radio on and it's ok!

A girl at the yard has her radio on all the time, even at night. We used to turn it off every evening as we thought it would disturb the horses with it on at night time too. The only other thing was she had it on a completely different radio station than another livery just opposite her and in the mornings it would be like a battle to have it on the loudest!

It depends on the horse. I have two horses who like nice quiet yards and would hate music being played all the time. One started to show stable stress when a new livery started to play radio in the stable next to him when she was at the yard.

I wont be supprised if you have to have a license for a brush soon its all about making money and jobs out of thin air and its about time these turkeys did something usefull.... if someone came on my yard and started about prs they would be handed a tub of vasaline and the radio:D oh and another thing how about me having to listen to all the crap that is being played on sound systems and radios at places I have to vist as part of my work can I charge the PRS for having to absorb the inane chatter and noise that sounds like a car alarm on radio one for instance ????

I think the horses love the radio on. Mine used to listen to classic FM when he was on box rest. Cows have been proved to yield more milk when listening to classical music than pop music:D One of my liveries has it on when she is mucking out in the mornings. It drives me barmy personally as at 8am in the morning I just need peace and quiet to wake up not rapping and DJs talking a load of garbage. I however, am getting old and cranky, but would like to wake up in peace in my own home without that racket:(

When one of our horses was on box rest for a very long period we went through 3 radio's! We found he liked heart FM and the classical station it used to chill him out.

Alot of people I know leave the radio on for their horses. When mine was on box rest I found a study saying that classical music is calming for them but anything with talking, adverts etc and any uptempo music does the exact opposite. So a CD of chilled classics would be much better than the radio if you wanted something to leave on for your horse. When they're out though I whack Radio 1 on to get me through the mucking out :-)

I always have the radio on in my yard. Normally the local station or Classic FM

When my youngster was in for 2 weeks I found he was much calmer, although I often found he had changed the volume. He could get to the radio and would play with it.

Always buy a cheap one from Asda

I find that if there is music around they do seem better.

We tend to have the yard radio on often it dosent seem to bother the horses they seem more interested in theire food!
my previous horse used to hate being in the stable to the extent that he would try to climb the door so we put he radio on and he seemed to be calmed down by classical!

i dont think that it bothers the horses unless it on to loud witch would be understandable.

thats my opinion :D

Personally, I don't like the radio on at the yard, I love the peace and quiet and the lack of intrusion from the demands of RL. When I'm with the horses, I couldn't give a fig about the latest pop gossip or which MP is caught behind the bike sheds.
Daily life is so full of noise, conversation and distractions that quiet time becomes a rarity and much valued by me anyway :)
If a livery has the radio on, I wouldn't say anything or be annoyed but given the choice, I would hit the off switch.

I've heard of lots of people using radios as comfort for box restee's successfully and I think having a radio on the yard in general is fine, as they others have said if the horses are quiet and happy then fine, and you also mention you a careful with the station/music selection which is key I think.

My mare was on a yard where her stable was next to the tackroom and the young yard girls would literally blare out club music etc all day every day and it truly drove her to insanity ! Needless to say we moved in the end, but she still weaves now which she'd never done in the previous 10 years with me prior to that :( !!!

We'd don't have a yard radio but I'd quite like one.

It would help the horses get used to loudspeakers/commentary when out competing and lots of show centres around here play music in the warm etc so I'd see it as good experience.
Also very useful if you want to do dressage to music.

I have a small portable radio in my stable and usually have it on when I am down there.

There are no other horses in the stable block where my girl is as they are all still living out so it can get quite lonely, so I like having the radio on when I am there.

I usually have it on Capital or Magic... good job there are no other horses in as I often start howling along to the radio and that is NOT a good thing to hear :D

Radio on at our yard all the time when someone is there. YO always comments on how yard somehow seems more relaxed when its on and horse seem more settled. Certainly no indication whatsover of it bothering any of them.
I think it helps owners relax to - I always muck out more productively with some jolly music in background!

I had a mare on box rest and popped on Vavaldi's Four Seasons for her. She objected strongly and booted the stable door til I switched it off.
Can't see a bit of background music is a problem, but being subjected to hours of loud music along with noisy hyper girls shrieking would upset some sensitive animals, while others would display passive acceptance, while confined to a box.
On the other hand, my horses were in a field where a weekend music festival was going on a few hundred yards away. I saw they were often found at the top of the field listening to the music. They seemed to enjoy the novelty.

I can't find the report but I have read that research was carried out and horses with a radio playing in the yard are more stressed out.
I play one while mucking out and that's it. It would do my head in having a radio playing all day and wouldn't put my horses through that. Horses like peace and quite I feel
