Just wondering if people go by rules at a yard to get on better with other liveries...
Im hoping to move to a yard soon and im just wondering what advice people can give to me....I havent been at a yard for over 10 yrs and although there are not many of us and people seem fairly private anyhow Im just wondering what works best from peoples experiences...
I tend to me very private in myself/ ride alone etc and do not like getting involved with bitchy conversations etc....I tend to go up to the yard through the day as well when no one is really about....
any advice would be great ;0)

We have rules on our yard that were drawn up by myself and the owner, nothing too heavy, all horses must be vacinated, wormed and insured and all fields must be poo picked, all rubbish etc must be cleared up and int he winter, all horses must be in by 5.30pm and everyone must ride with a hat, other than that they are just to protect the owner and the livery. I have also learnt that all yards have a bully and bitch, and even the most private of people can get drawn in the only advice I can give is too stick too what you know and don't get influenced by the bully, the yard managers are normally powerless to do anything unless they break rules, when they can get rid of them but they are too cute too break rules. Its like being back at school! If I could afford to own my own yard then I would never go back to a livery yard again!!!!!!!!!!!

As above really- everyone has different ways of doing things, and no-one ever agrees with anyone else, so best just keep out of it unless its a welfare issue.

We have rules which generally keep the place neat and tidy, safeguard the welfare of the horse and owner etc....(occasionally i have a tantrum about waterbuckets and wheelbarrows in walkways

).....basically, i keep my areas clean and tidy ( i have 3 stables and a feedroom to myself so its easy ) keep your part of communal areas tidy ...
Smile and nod at the yard know-it-all and ignore everything they say- (its usually rubbish)

and enjoy your horse.

I usually ride alone due to the times i go to the yard, and personal preference - but occasionally i will join in with a yard hack around the woods.

Main fall-out point on our yard is people not doing their fair shar of poo-picking

I love my yard! No bitching, people are absolutely top banana, the rules are relaxed but all make sense if you see what I mean. We have a curfew over the winter so fields don't get trashed, even the DIY liverys are checked thoroughly late at night, and there is a busy but relaxed vibe, it's great! However I also think it is one of a kind and it would be difficult to find anywhere else as nice.

We don't have many rules - must ride with hat, wear hi-viz when out, look after facilities and no riding if no one else is at the yard are the main ones.

I am very lucky at the yard I am at, have been there 3 yrs with minimal hastle.

It is full livery only so that could make a difference.

There are a couple of rules (picking up droppings out of school) - actually I think that is about it - but this rule is not policed and prob should be.

There is stuff in the contract about worming, vaccination etc.

I have been at yards that were an absolute hellish nightmare.

Let me quote one or two rules;

'Don't use water in the summer apart from half a bucket and a sponge to wipe off as water rates expensive for owner - Absolutely no hoses'

'Allow YO to steal supplements, mane and tail and hoof products, feed their horse entirely from your supply'

'Don't take your expensive rubber matting and weave grill with you when you leave - because that will destroy the stable'

The list goes on..........................

I like the yard I am at because if there are any issues the YO is very open and helpful and things get sorted out that way rather than by way of lots of rules.

On the whole everyone gets on but there is always going to be some conflict with one or two - that is the nature of the human being?

you arent allowed to ride if no-one else is at yard?!
i can see thats great for safety but surely that must cut out some riding time..?
i work and often ride at 5/6am so it would really compremise my riding!
