Yard rules

Ours are made up as we go along. :p

No socialising on the yard
No boiling the kettle as it costs too much
No lights to be turned on (as above)
No having fun
No hosepipes as we waste too much water and it costs too much.
No helping each other out as its technically stealing from the YO

Im sure my YO is going doolally

Wow is all I can say.

We have lots :D

Some of them here:

Closing the yard gate is a very important one, I feel.

No unsupervised children

No dogs (though people take no notice of this one and I don't enforce it as so far they have all been kept under control and supervision).

Hat and suitable footwear to be worn when mounted.

All horses should be insured.

No feeding or interference with other people's horses without prior permission.

No riding in the paddocks

No smoking, bad language or running about.

That kind of thing.

My yard doesn't have any set rules, YO is very easy going. However, the yard works well, everyone seems to do their bit to a greater or lesser degree. We know what the YO thinks is important and we respect that.

^^ This for me too, it's a lovely quiet yard and there are no children which I think helps; all the liveries are experienced horse owners. Although it is a classical dressage yard there is no pressure to be 'classical' and you are totally free to do your own thing/feed what you want/use the tack you want without feeling judged.

we don't have any. like we don't have to poo pick or anything. don't have to wear hats, i rarely put a head collar on my mare she just knows where her field is, if horses take de-tours its seen as funny. VERY easy going yard, use the house and everything in it like it is our own. lovely yard. obviously common sense used ie shut yard gate when you come in, if farrier has been or been clipping etc sweep up. as for smoking or dogs they are both aloud.

Who on earth has time to poo pick every day? If I did that I wouldn't have time to ride.

Takes me 10 mins from start to finish for my 2 each morning & evening (and thats pottering!) as they are still out 24/7
Its far quicker than mucking out 2 & getting hay/water done.
Some of us may have the time or inclination (or a bad back!) so maybe not wanting to spend time on 1 weekend day doing endless barrows :)

Each to their own tho :)

Can someone explain why you should pick out hooves before and after using the school? I would always pick them out for riding, but (and I am sure I am being very slow) why specially for the school and after using the school?

Our yard is so beautiful and stately and YO is so lovely that I am always scurrying around sweeping. There is only one livery now and I don't think we have rules, we just behave!

I guess it depends on the type of surface as some surfaces stay in the horses hooves, so over a period of time if it is a large yard that's a lot of surface to be taken out of the arena.

Sadly common sense is severely lacking in some. :(

Thanks everyone for the replies. One more question for all you lovely people: how is "borrowing" without consent dealt with at your various yards, or yo's & ym's - how do you deal with it when talking to person hasn't made a lick of difference?

Our YO is the worst offender for "borrowing"-if something goes missing we generally check his stable first LOL
I think the only time YO has got involved with any dispute was when the loose dogs were crapping in the hay!

Our yard is completely DIY so fairly relaxed however the one rule that everyone is fighting the YO/farmer about this year is all hay and straw to be bought from yard and no outside sources. Considering he has put crappy hay to £7 a bale and £3.50 for straw we have all pointed out we shall be going elsewhere!

yes I have a set of rules - not because my liveries are 'stupid' or 'unreliable' purely because everyone knows where they stand, everyone does the same and lessens the 'gruntings and mumblings !' and it's clear in black and white.

Eveyone must follow them or my wrath will be heard in the next county ! ;-O

simple rules are

No smoking on ANY part of thr estblishment whatso ever.
keep hay barn doors closed ( doors bang in wind otherwise)
clean up after your dog
clean up after your horse
clean up after your children
clean up after yourself
No swearing
treat horses with the utmost respect
any ill treatment will result in 24hr notice being given

we also have a contract which states yard times and health and safety notices

Happy yard with of 25 liveries - 8 being with me for over 12yrs and 10 with me between 5 and 8 yrs ! the other 7 are in their 2nd and 4th years !

How on earth do some of you folk, keep horses, ride and work? - no way could I work and keep horses if I was not allowed on the yard prior to 7.30 or even 7 am - I couldn't possibly make the 8.30 pm rule - with two horses to excercise - and i dont mean this 30 mins schooling the world has in recent years adopted - I am talking about fit horses going on hour to two hour hacks - and 45 min schooling sessions (not on the same night though!) - with a proper warm up and cool down done for and aft. I dont get to the yard till 6pm as I dont finish work till 5.30 pm - I am honestly astounded that you folks can do this - are you all on full livery or something?

Each to their own tho

Takes two of us about 30 mins to do 2 barrows worth each weekend. If I had to do it every day i would not have time to ride. I dont get to the yard until 7 most nights

Fair enough, however mine are currently out 24/7 - and produce 1.75 barrows per day between the pair; barrow being a Wickes 'special' black builders type barrow:D .
I (or rather my back) just couldn't cope with doing 12+ barrows at a weekend :(
In the depths of winter when they are in at night I DO leave the field stuff to once or twice a week tho :)

Our yard rules are:-

Animals are fed before people

If anyone arrives, put the kettle on

Visiting dogs are given a biscuit

Sister has made the rule that I must wear BP if jumping :(

Put your hat on
:D :D :D :D

(We keep our horses at home :D)
