Nearly had kittens this evening as Yo came down and said he'd seen a pickup van come through the gate , into the yard and then drive away. He'd watched back the CCTV as the chain had been off the gate when he'd returned to the yard. The guy had faffed about with the chain for ages apparently. I get very worried over these things!!

So now we're putting another wire round the gate this time with a code on it aswell as the chain.

Not worried about night time as it's alarmed and has lasers going across it, it's more during the daytime.

It amazes me as this is the most secure yard I've been on. There's 2 within 3/4 miles that are open for the world to come in, yet there's never any hassle!

Trailers and everything else have a lock over the tow bar and tack rooms coded and alarmed. No idea what else they'd be after? To be honest they can take whatever they like as long as it's not my horse :(

Get your horse freezemarked on it's shoulder so that if it is stolen it can be identified by anyone. Get the tack tack marked and smart watered so that it can be identified. Reverse the hinges on the gates so that they can not be lifted off the hinges. Get the roof of trailers and lorries postcoded in large letters.

All the above and also get the signs saying horses are freezemarked and premises are alarmed

Preferably also borrow a couple of large black and tan dogs - they dont like encountering them!

Personally I would be taking tack home for a bit!

Vary your routine too. And also advise the police, since it sounds very unlikely this was an innocent 'visit'.

When I went to a Horsewatch meeting a couple of years ago they suggested postcode marking EVERYTHING - even buckets, brooms, no matter how low value. The idea is that if anyone snoops around & sees that low value items are marked & identifiable then they will assume that tack etc is marked & won't bother to break in. Get your saddle post code marked too.
