I have my gates padlocked, my buildings alarmed and I have security cameras. Still doesn’t stop people going in but when we, and several of our neighbours, got broken into one night, the people with alarms didn’t get anything taken.
We are fortunate that the YO lives at the yard. Her dog hears everything. The tack room has a steel security door & it's alarmed, as are other parts of the yard. There are also cameras all over the yard & you can view through your mobile pone. The gates are automatic & you need to know the code. Any lorries at the yard are locked & are immobilised. Generally we are a harder yard to steal from so thieves will go somewhere else.
I have cameras everywhere including one that notifies me if on my phone if anything comes through the gate. I also have pretty decent padlocks and all hinges are bolted, not screwed.
A farmer friend who has a long drive has a vehicle detector set in the tarmac which sounds an alarm in the house and yard. It will wake anyone asleep in the main bedroom if it goes off at night.
Live on-site, dogs, including Rottweiler, in the house. Anyone entering the yard through the main gate has to pass the house. All gates into/out of yard locked. Cameras all over the place. Yard at the end of a cul-de sac with very aware neighbours.
Years ago some of the dogs slept in an outbuilding, several cars (ours and neighbours) were broken into, mine was the nearest to our dogs, rather than taking anything from my car, the ne'er-do-wells (who were later identifed and caught) left me a set of GHD hair styling tongs and a small suitcase, which had been stolen from a neighbour's car.
We could only surmise that the Rottweiler that we had then had looked out of the outbuilding window and barked at them, so they dropped everything and ran away.
That was when we started to lock all gates.
We live on-site, have cameras in the stables and have padlocks everywhere, also have a sighthound who thinks he’s a guard dog so we know if so much as a leaf drops ?
Had a professional security firm come in 2012 as we were getting a lot of burglaries locally at similar properties to ours.
We live on-site.
We were (still are!!) on a budget, so what we settled for was "fake" cameras scattered around the place. These were at one time real cameras but were de-activated and they were carefully made to look real.
The security firm put up their "banner" saying that "CCTV images are being recorded for security purposes" so the whole set-up looks real!
We also have an audible alarm which shreaks like a banshee if anyone comes in and sets off the sensor.
All the yard yates have padlocks and chains, ditto the tack-room. All field gates are padlocked and my horses are freezemarked.
If we get a problem anytime then we'll be going for some CCTV.
