I'm relatively new to having ponies on livery yards we've always either owned or rented land ourselves so I am hoping that my experience on the last two yards I have been on is unusual and not the norm because it is highly disappointing to watch how low people can sink.

Each time a person leaving the yard for whatever reason it appears to be that other liveries or the owners have a complete free for all on their belongings :( Everything from tack, yard equipment to bales of hay or bags of shavings on one yard a lovely ladies shed was stolen.

I've just moved yards and lo and behold after having removed all but my hay (to be fair I keep most of my things at home given this type of nonsense) I arrived with a trailer to collect this morning and bales have all been split open part taken so none can be easily removed.

Can someone please assure me that this is not general practise :(:(

No this definetly not normal ! do you all have your own areas for stacking hay etc ? I would ask yard owner to rebrief ground rules. I know its extreme but makes you think about rigging a camera up to catch the "take what you likie" in action ! hay n feed is expensive enough without someone else borrowing on a long term basis !

Am I right in thinking you were moving off the yard and left the hay there to collect at a later date?

Whilst I don't think it's right that they opened your bales could it be possible that the liveries thought you weren't coming back for them?

I would be speaking to the YO and expecting the liveries in question to replace the bales they took.

I've been on several yards and even though the first ones had no theft/bitchiness issues and were decent places to be, the final one made up for lost time and absolutely nothing was safe. What made it worse was that it wasn't necessarily the lower life-form liveries - even the YO had red hot fingers, told lies etc. Unfortunately that last experience totally soured me on the thought of being on a yard ever again and I now have my own land.

In your situation I would definitely mention your hay to the YO. It might be an innocent case of crossed wires, or not, but either way it should be addressed.

Good luck!

I had a set of 4 NEW magnetic boots stolen, what is sadder is that they where for my then 28yo horse to help with her arthritis.

When I first saw this thread I thought it was on about yards being broken into - not liveries stealing from each other - I would hope it wasn't the norm & would speak to YO - this isn't acceptable to me but unfortunately it seems acceptable 'to others' hopefully the yard you are moving to will not have these problems

In this instance its been the yard officer/livery manager that has taken the hay and encouraged others to help themselves. I only gave notice yesterday and moved my ponies same day advising I would collect my belongings including the hay within 24 hours. All the liveries were aware as its a small yard. I have not, as many have done off this particular yard disappeared without paying, I gave a good months fee to cover the required notice period. This same person is always telling people that liveries haven't paid as a reason for her behaviour which I know to be untrue. I've watched this happen in the last month to other liveries as well. Literally as soon as they give notice and have left the yard for the day all of their belongings disappear.

At the yard before it was mainly one of the liveries but once one had started several others joined in and when questioned all denied knowledge.

I've been fortunate and found private land with only one other pony in residence with a friend so won't be having these problems in future but I do hope other people don't have to put up with this sort of behaviour.
