Does your yard have opening and closing times? If so what are they and what do you consider to be reasonable?

At new yard no not as far as i know, but at old yard yes just at weekends we had to be gone by 6pm as that is when the gate is shut! that was just winter though as it was dark by then and i think it is reasonable

My YO doesn't mind what time I'm there, but if it's irregular hours then I let him and his wife know so that they aren't alarmed by the car

No, nor would I consider a yard that had "opening" times. I want to see my horses when I want to, sometimes if I have a long distance show I load and leave at 5am (always consideratley always tell YO what time I'm leaving and park trailer so I can hitch and load out of earshot) But I keep mine on a working farm so they are very flexible. In fact I think it's great we have people going up and various times - I've popped in at 11.30 on my way home from the pub before - as it gives theives less chance to know our routines.

so what if you work until 6pm??????

I ama YO, I live next to my yard, if anyone came down to see their horse at 11.30pm at night I would set the dogs on them!

We have an alarm that is set when the last person goes home which is never usually after 7/8ish, people respect that we have a life after doing the horses, but I set the alarm, no one else has access.

I feed and turn out in the morning so nobody comes down before feed time unless going to a show, it works well for everyone here.

To be honest no one i know on the yard works until 6pm on the weekends so i dont think it affects them - it was quite a small yard (around 20 horses/ponies) and most of the people were children that rode at weekends! I didnt like the fact it shut at that time (didnt know it did until i got chucked off one time!) oh and the gate wasnt usually opened until 6.15am weekdays and about 7.30am weekends... i didnt love it but it always worked for everyone! My new yard doesnt have opening/closing times - at both yards the owners lived on site

I do totally respect your POV, I suppose when you get used to something, you do not want it taken away.
However, I do personally need access early to earn a living, so for me, if i need to go up at 5am as I do some days then its a must on the tick list, shutting at night times would bother me less, as long as I could do horsey before work thats all I need really

I'm so used to having mine at home - now BBEars is on a livery yard, I find it hard not to just 'pop' up. There are no set hours as such, but I'm often the first and last due to my job. I simply couldn't do it any other way. Also I don't like her to be left for hours and hours so try not to leave her for more than 11/12 hrs.

My YO's are very lovely, I'd hate to think I disturb them and try to be as quite as possible, and don't turn on all the lights - just the one for my stable. The dogs know my car now.

When they were in the fields next to my home, i'd often pop out to see them any time of day, often on the way back from the pub!

Current yard - 5am till bout 9pm ish Mon to Fri and 6am till 8pm ish on a weekend - you are never stopped from going but if you are going to be any earlier/later then we let yard owners know - curtosey really.

When i was up North i moved to a yard and it was locked up until 9am and then re locked up at 7pm - i did not know before i moved there..... i lasted about 6 weeks until i found a new yard

Yes but you probably have a posh yard!! I am total DIY and the YO has no probs - it is very rare I go up late - and if you want to know the reason - it wasn't just for fun - my mare had given birth to her first foal, who was a bit weak and wobbly and they were MY responsibilty to check on..........so don't think I'm some sort of disrespectful chav - I'm not.

I agree with hermangerman, i am a yo and live on site. I dont let anyone on here before 8am, now that may seem late to alot of you but i have a life outside horses, as does my OH who works very long hours. The horses get restless if they see anyone about (i live right behind the stables so can hear everything) and also my dogs are here as guard dogs and its not fair to expect them not to react to hearing people moving around in the early hours. The evening doesnt worry me so much as the gates get locked last thing when my OH gets home but we find everyone has gone by 8pm at the very latest.

we can go whenever we want, which is brill. we always let the YM/YO know if we are going to be earlier than 'normal' though. some people are down at the yard at 5.30every morning, and some don't leave til 10!!!!

As far as I'm aware there aren't set closing times, but we only have two DIYers and they both work flexible hours that allow them to come at about 9am, so no-one really comes that early. Same with evening yards, nobody really tends to stay after 7ish (and most people don't even stay til then). The YO lives on site, so I think if anyone was going to be there very early or late they'd probably let her know out of common courtesy and to stop her from setting the dog on them! (Not that he'd scare anyone, big soppy Lab

Of course I don't think that

we are not a posh yard but all my liveries are full (not diy) so it is different, in fact I don't see some people for weeks
crazy.gif

And of course if there is a reason ie foal being born that would be a different matter, I would call off the dogs & turn the alarm off for a few mins

Usually 8am - 9pm. There are no set hours, however commons sense usually prevails.

Our YO lives on site and if the dogs are barking she will be straight out. She also tends to question any strange cars that are on the yard. If I am getting anyone over to visit, I tend to let her know just in case.

Hermangerman & Blue_bear....

I respect that fact that YO have lives beyond horses, but what if horses are ill ?
Do you compromise under these circumstances?

We've fixed times in theory at our yard, but its something like 6am to 9pm, I think that caters for most people.

totally different if horses are ill, i can list a number of occasions where i have been up at all hours with liveries and their horses, and also let them stay over so they are on hand

The yard we are on has opening times of 6am to 10pm.

We can come earlier/later as long as we let the owner know. Apparently someone didn't tell them they would be coming late one night and was met by the farmer wielding a gun

I've never heard of a YO yet that wouldn't let an owner in if a horse was ill, I just dont think anyone would be that unreasonable.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree, i have my own and if they were at livery and were il, i would expect to be with them, therefore wouldnt stop anyone else doing the same

Of course, in fact my job is really 24hrs/365 days, I never go on holiday, but over the years I have often stood outside in the pi**ing down rain walking a liveries horse around in the middle of the night while waiting for the vet etc etc, my liveries often go away on holiday giving me no notice, but I can't say anything - they are on full livery
tongue.gif

I do what I have to do - I look after the horses, but I DO have a life after dark (even if it is only watching tv and being on here!) I am just saying that I couldn't cope with people in the yard at all hours of the day & night, I'm sure some other yards would be ok with it, I just couldn't cope

Well said

Well thats more than fair I think, you're both quite right to have a life beyond your yards, and you both compromise when it comes to illness, so no one could complain at that x

But when you are competing BSJA sometimes you don't get back til after midnight if they are big classes. I've never had a YO who had a problem with this. I've invariably been on full livery, I just unload and put horse away as quietly and quickly as possible. Sometimes also for county shows you have to leave very early such as around 5am, and of course sometimes you might need to wash and bathe before you leave. I wouldn't be at a yard that wouldn't allow me to compete or would restrict my competing.

I think yards with competition horses are well aware of the unsociable hours and cater for this, my yard is just happy hackers, the kids do PC stuff, but if we were going to a show that required a 5am start, it wouldn't be a problem.

Obviously a yard has to fit with your needs, and every yard is different, people just tend to move yards if their current one isn't catering for them in the way they like.
