I respect that fact that YO have lives beyond horses, but what if horses are ill ?
Do you compromise under these circumstances?

Of course, in fact my job is really 24hrs/365 days, I never go on holiday, but over the years I have often stood outside in the pi**ing down rain walking a liveries horse around in the middle of the night while waiting for the vet etc etc, my liveries often go away on holiday giving me no notice, but I can't say anything - they are on full livery

I do what I have to do - I look after the horses, but I DO have a life after dark (even if it is only watching tv and being on here!) I am just saying that I couldn't cope with people in the yard at all hours of the day & night, I'm sure some other yards would be ok with it, I just couldn't cope

Agreed!

As Dairy Farmers, I would be most annoyed to have some one turn up at 11.30pm, to see to a horse when I have no choice but to be awake at 5.30am the next morning....and indeed EVERY morning of the year.

We allow people onto our land, but we are entitled to a life and privacy ourselves.

Again, like others have said, I would never turn anyone away who had a sick horse or tell them they couldn't come early/late once in a blue moon when they were going to special show etc. (Not that it happens here).

As we have to lock the gate, I don't want to have to know I've got to stay up until all hours to be on hand to secure the farm before I can retire to bed.

I'm only up now because I fell asleep on the settee for two hours early evening.....not tired yet, but I'll regret it in the morning!

nope not time limits as such, you can be as early as you want (i don't have a gate key(don't want one, really the gates are like alligators and i will only end up injuring myself!!!) and as late as you like, if you are going to particularly late or early just let our YO know and she will make sure its opened and closed accordingly. i don't think she would be very happy if we all decided we wanted to do our horse 8pm though. as long as we are curtosy and give her warning if we need to visit our horses out of "normal" hours, she would be absolutely fine with it. she is a star like that

My friend has her horse on full livery at a yard where you weren't allowed up before 10am and had to be away for 4pm. Now that IS unreasonable! Unfortunatly there were no other similar yards in the area so people didn't have much choice.

No problems at ours, but tack room is locked at 6 and all liveries have keys, so as long as its locked after then thats fine. Also we have a big diary and if your riding late its better to write it in there so someone knows your about on the yard late.

i was once on a yard which had a off the yard at the weekends by 5 on the sat and 4 on the sunday, even if you where at a show you had to have permission to come back late in advance, this was not always given including someone who had qualified to go to a regionals.............they left for the show and never came back as they were not willing not to go

Reading through some of these replies it sees some yards are totally bonkers about the times of visiting...off at 5 & 4 at weekends...errr..what??

And for the you have to get permission to come back from a show if your late?....wtf?

Of course every yard has to have it's peace time for the horses sakes too as well as people that live on site, I would want my privacy too at some point.

My current place doesnt really have a prob, it's electric gate that we all have code for, people do live on site there too...its a big yard so will have lots of people coming and going at alsorts of times.
I only go to yard out of hours if my horse was ill but I would always let YO know this so they are not alarmed for someone being around.

We can come and go as we please. There is only me and one other livery and 5 horses on the yard. So not much hassle for YO. First one down feeds them all then if anyone wants a lye in, or is away, including YO we put theirs out.

We are all down 6.30 through the week and 8 weekends. I'm the last one on the yard and bring mine in at 7. In the past I have had to come down at 5.30 through the week, but it wasn't a problem.

I love my yard

we arnt not livery, i would find it differcult to find livery as mine are feed 4 times a day last being at 11.30 at night, then 6 in the morning so late opening in morning wouldnt suit either. but i understand if you run a yard an live on site that you dont want people at odd tmes like me.

None of my yards have ever specified times to me for coming in the morning or at night. But then again I always let them know if I have to come early (for events) or late. I understand it is their home as well as their job but at the end of the day it is their decision to do this therefore they should expect this kind of thing.
I think as long as your decent about it telling them any unusual times then they will be fine with you.

In general all the DIY yards I've been at have never had opening/closing times. The only one that did was when I was at uni/college yard where the gates and tack room got locked at 9pm and not opened until 7.30 the next morning. Generally this was no problem, I normally walked there as lived very nearby so could just climb over the gate if it was locked (no need to worry about car parking!) and if i wanted to ride early would either do it bareback or hide my saddle under some hay the night before so I could get it to ride early!

Yeah I think my yard is 6am-10pm. YO has to close the main gates and padlock them and the tackroom is locked up then. If we need to be there earlier or later then we have to warn in advance. I dont find it a problem. I'm never there out of hours.

I can access my yard any time day or night - quite literally 24 hours per day - however, if i'm going down late I always tell my YO as they live on site and would worry if they saw car lights go down to stables after the normal time we are usually all gone.
