Does anyone know of any yards in Aberdeen?
Looking for (must have!):
school
all year turn out (preferably 24/7 in summer)
good hacking
DIY

If possible I would like individual or mixed turnout as my 2 are a mare and a gelding and I don't want to have to split them up. The mare is also a mild cribber.

Have spoken with Aberdeen Riding Centre but they seem very expensive? What is the usual price for DIY in Aberdeen? I'm currently paying £130 pcm per horse.

I'd try Loanhead eq centre, or possibly tertowie. There is a lovely looking one in peterculter but I don't know what its called. Not sure how good any of these are though.

By Aberdeen Riding Centre, is that Hayfield? Dont think they offer year round turnout (at least when I was there for uni team training, we had to chuck all the ponies out into the indoor schools every night)?

Have you tried places like Oldfold or Loanhead? Loanhead offer turnout and good forestry hacking. They also have regular events there. Denburn is near there too. There's a fancy new yard started up in the Bieldside / Culter corrider - no idea what they charge though!

I keep my horse privately outwith the city so cant advise that well, but there are plenty of yards around. I assume it gets cheaper as you come further out so depends how far you want to travel. Out here (about 30 miles away), I know of local yards which charge £20 a week.

Brilliant, thank you.

MM Aberdeen Riding Centre is Oldfold in Milltimber, who apparently charge £40 a week for grass livery only  I will try Loanhead :)

Measles, are you Aberdeen way then? Can I go on your waiting list :D

Scarymare, thanks for your suggestions :)

Just had a look at Tertowie but think it may be a bit far, IIRC it's bout 30 mins outside of the city?
Anyone now what that yard that MagicMelon mentioned is called?

Loanhead is about £11 a day for DIY, you would be better with the likes of hillhead or the farm around the corner from loanhead I forget it's name. Beanshill in westhill also and that's £125 a month DIY, Denburn is about £300 DIY, Sunnyside does not offer DIY. You could try Eastermains. Or if you just want grass Newton farm dies that for £85 per horse and has a brand new outdoor school. If you need contact numbers give me a PM. I can think of heaps more but they other side of city towards Dyce and beyond and I assume due to you mentioning Loanhead you this side of town. Altrees as well in Maryculter but I think they full. I think loanhead offer something call grass and box for around £130 and you buy hay/straw on top but the boxes are small and the field you get is not the best.

Oh BTW the yard I at is £295 pm for DIY I think any of the big yards with indoor schools etc will be of a similar cost. It's the small farm type ones you will get cheap livery at.

Milltimber farm is the name of it but there is a waiting list, sorry it won't let me edit the original post hence the three posts in a row. If you Pm where you stay I can give you yards in your area.

That's brilliant, thank you! :)

I am currently in Surrey but when I move up I will probably be at the Holburn/Garthdee end of town. Is Milltimber the one that used to be Oldfold? I learned to ride there and would certainly be in the right area although if it is them they seem really expensive! I assume I would get hay/haylage and bedding included if I am paying £300 pcm per horse for DIY livery?!

I pm you did it work as using my phone and it's a pain. No just up the road from olefins is a brand new yard, with indoor school and new stables , it's about £140 a month DIY but I think there is a waiting list, are you on facebook if so search for mill timber farm livery if you google it comes up. But next to the new yard the old yard is also there so they might have spaces . Denburn you will pay extra ontop of the £300 for DIY. Your closest yard would be Sunnyside in cults , you would get outdoor livery and your horses would be in same field as they mix outdoor horse for £125 each and that includes hayledge in field they also have small indoor and outdoor and brilliant hacking. Again google it or if not I can send you the number.

There are quite a few small yards with schools and good hacking round the corner from Loanhead, Maines of Countesswells one is called I think. There is Kingsford on the road to Westhill does grass livery not sure how much though Cadfaelandcoffee would no more about there, Redwings might do livery they have a website if thats any help.

Thanks again, speighty79 I didn't get the PM - can you resend? Sunnyside sounds like the best so far so will give them a ring either tomorrow or Monday :)

Mince pie for some reason my pm does not work :-(, not sure if it's because I on iPhone. But I can see your pm to me. If u pmme a email address I will send you a list of the yards and numbers :-) . I used to livery at Sunnyside it's a nice yard and the lady Debbie who runs it , is great.

Hi Mince Pie, welcome back to sunny Aberdeenshire when you arrive :D Sunnyside only does full livery or grass livery and fields are split into mares and geldings. It's a nice yard (was there when a student as close to town) but they don't have a great deal of land so don't offer individual turnout / paddock just for your 3. It used to be £325 / horse but that's probably gone up a bit since then!! It does not do DIY livery. Oldfold is still a riding school isn't it? Ltd access to school I would think. I'm Aberdeenshire but live outside Newmachar which is quite far away. Feel free to PM me if you want any further info about Sunnyside or anywhere else, happy to help.

Hi the new yard at milltimber isn't £140 per month its £45 per week.Thats for box/grazing and haylage/indoor and outdoor school/you pay for shaving etc on top of that,it is also totally diy-no staff.Hackings not that great tbh ok if you don't mind roadwork.YO has built some x country jumps round edge of one of huge field and also jumping paddock -only available in summer.
Doesn't do grass livery and fields are not mixed at new yard.He has a waiting list for yard.
eta- you can keep your horse out all year round just that you have to have a stable as well.He thinks cos if grass liveries horse gets ill/ needs box rest then has no stable so everyone has to have one.
He also runs the 'old' yard its £30 per week grass livery and £35 for stable with haylage. It has outdoor sand school. He does keep his grass on both yards in pretty good nick and tends to limit number of horses on them to avoid churning them up.Horses starving tends not to be a problem more likely to be too fat
There are only 40 horses on new yard and think about 20 on old yard.

PS will say he's a pretty good YO and the folk that are there have been there for years so it tends not to have a big turn around of liveries. We've been there 6/7 years. He even has a livery thats been there 54 yrs.Not that folk don't leave(kids grow up etc) but it can take a while.

Sunnyside mixes turnout for Grass Livery , it's only indoor that's separated. If you after just grass, Newton Farm would be good too, again great hacking like Sunnyside. I've Emailed you all the contact numbers for the yards . Good luck hope you find somewhere :-)

I thought that would be about average compared to full, I on full and pay £415 and have to buy bedding on top of that so a average month is about £450ish..??

I'm afraid its the oil factor. We are very sheltered economically up here which is why housing is so pricey too. However mince pie £130pcm in Surrey???? I remember paying £500 pcm for full livery when I left Windsor in 2001! I looked at some (admittedly posh) yards in Berkshire last year and some were knocking onto £800. I'll bet nobody is making a huge profit either.

Will PM you with details, but I think the likes of what you're after would be Hillhead, Sunnyside, Thornhill, Newton Farm, and a few similar ones. All are pretty much between Countesswells Road and Cults. Sunnyside has small indoor, larger outdoor. Hillhead has outdoor, and is closest to Hayfield. Loanhead is rather more expensive, and I would worry that their fields don't have much shelter for a horse that's out 24/7. Great school, though! Hayfield don't really do livery, other than on a special-case basis.

Useful thing about being near Hayfield: if you get a Hayfield membership at 25 quid/year, you can go use their schools (2 indoors, 2 outdoors) if they are free. This is most convenient if you can go during daytime hours, as they're generally used for lessons evenings/weekends. There's also some XC jumps, although not all of these are maintained. This is good to know if you end up at a yard without a school (such as Thornhill).

Hacking from any of these places is terrific, though some require slightly longer on the road to get into the woods.

Hayfield has a tack shop with a very good range of products (Aberdeenshire Saddlery). Loanhead has the Feed Shop, which also carries a recently-expanded range of horsey gear (as well as some snacks).

yep diy livery up here is getting a bit silly. We are paying our limit (got 3 2 at new yard and 1 at old yard) so if he puts it up again there will be a lot of folk leaving new yard.
To be fair to YO tho Aberdeen city are well known for high rates and his rates for new place are over 25000 a year. They apparently rated it on what he COULD earn not what he does earn on it.He doesn't rent school out there are 40 horses but only say 30 liveries and school has to be paid somehow.Would have been just as happy with a floodlit outdoor all weather school but can't deny benefits of indoor in our north east weather.
There are lots of littler places that are nice )and cheaper ,you just have to search around.
Will pm you milltimbers details
