I'm having to make a huge decision about yards at the moment, I am at a fantastic yard with a brilliant yard owner and excellent facilities which include jumping arena, flat arena cross country course etc but it is very pricey and about 20-30 mins from my house, when you have 4 horses it is a lot of money etc and especially when you can't drive it is hard to get lifts all the time.

I have an opportunity to go to a yard 2 mins from my house, very friendly and the yard owner is amazingly supportive to me and a great friend, it would be a lot cheaper but the facilities are not as good, there is a small 30x20 indoor which you can flat/lunge and an arena in hacking distance, the yard owner has offered to take me to arenas and shows during the week etc so it would be great, i just don't want any regrets ... :(

whats your opinions and what would you do? i thought reading other peoples views may help me to come to a clear decision!

thankyou :)

I would move. I've been at yards with a school which was smaller than a 20m circle and managed to school in it ok. You can't beat being close to home, and you can use the money you are saving to go towards hiring the nearby school if you want to. You already know that you'll get on with the yard owner, so that's a huge bonus!

okay will make a list of the pros and cons!! and yes being close to home would be fab.. i just dont want to end up moving which will be a huge task and end up really missing being at more of a competition yard, both are temp options anyway as in the nearish future we want our own place, but as probably the whole of the people on the horse and hound forum know that it isnt that easy haha! :) thankyou

Obviously good facilities are important, but being close to home and having an indoor school sounds great. The money you will save on 4 horses doesn't sound insubstantial. Also, you will be saving 45mins to 1 hour per day in travelling, you could spend that time riding :)

If you leave your existing yard on good terms, the door should still be open if things don't work out.

Just looking at that website of yours and what you do I personally would stay as how long would going out with the new YO last for and I would get fustrated not having the school to jump in on my yard, having been on a yard with a school too small to jump in I wouldnt do it again. Are you happy and settled where you are? Do your parents help you financially at all? Also I had a nosey but your website didnt say wherabouts in the country (county) are you (purely being nosey)?

my parents help me a great deal with the financial side of things as they enjoy it as much as i do.. but thats not the point i hate the fact they have to spend so much on livery when it could go on various other things even un horse related! i am settled where i am yes and its fantastic there but can have an atmosphere.. as it is a very big yard and you can imagine what it gets like, i am based on the border of hereford/gloucester very close to hartpury college :)
