whats your yard like?
i have 52 people on my yard and 1 person who rides regularly with me .... ie after work, and at weekends.
i would say about 10-12 ride as and when... once or twice a week... and the rest dont?
on a weekend the yard is dead till at least gone 10am...
is this the norm? do people ride there horses?
just annoyed as my regular rider is moving off and shes become a really good friend too...
so whats the crack is it the same on your yards, this is the second yard iv been on in manchester since leaving kent... and its the same story.

We all ride, the YO and her daughter go off to sponsored rides and shows. I am starting to show my boy when I have less personal stress.

Me and the other livery ride out together often.

Two liveries just play really and don't do a lot.

I am moving as my regular riding buddy is leaving and I will be all alone

So am moving to find more friends to ride with

. There's only 4 on mine, and they all ride, some more often than others! Me and my friend ride most days, and I think the rest ride less often, not too sure though as I rarely see them.

ha ha you all seem really shocked!!
theres three barns with 20 in two and about6 in another and then people live out all year.
im gutted...
no one shares lifts with lorries either (not that they go anywhere)
and there is not 1 person who could come to a x-country event, not many who can even canter out hacking.
im not slagging them off theyre all lovely people but god!!

Blimey 52 people!!

Our yard has 7 liveries, 1 is too scared to hack her horse out, 2 are too scary to hack with (canter and gallop everywhere!), and 2 are kids with ponies. The other person and I often hack out together as we don't mind going at each others pace. Was a nightmare before she came, I hate hacking on my own!

OMG - it sounds like my yard - there is about 50 of us too and there is only me and a few others that ride out so to speak - I am gutted as three of my riding buddies are leaving this week and my best riding buddy ever is out of action as her wonderful loan pony is lame :-(

Alot of people on my yard go to shows n stuff but you never see them ride - ie in the school etc? It odd...... I wish there were more nice people for me to ride with as its so boring on your own!!!

and NO one rides in the winter - its stupid!!! Just me and maybe 2 others !!!!!! DAFT!!!

I have just moved to a new yard but so cant really comment although in the last 3 days i have been the first there! On my old yard no one would come up till 10am either! I dont like my horse been in later than about 8, never mind 10 or later! i couldnt lie in bed knowing she had been in for all that time. The worst were the ones that gave their horses bare minimum hay so that when they put them in at 4 they had finished it all by 7 and had to stand with nothing till 10 am the day after!

i know well... its madness people hack out with there mp3's on! i was talking to someone out riding once and she was listening to music! hacking alone is a bit rubbish but its hard to find someone to hack with isnt it?

Amy was previously at a yard just a little smaller than yours. Most people rode, but at different times of the day.

However, yard rule - You had to be on the yard by 9.00am at the latest. If you couldn't get out of bed to do your horse, you were asked to find somewhere else to keep it!

we should set up a riders only yard...
alot of people on my yard as you said go to shows... they do showing the horse just gets a bath the night before!!
and riding in the winter.... unheard of dont you know its cold...the ground id hard....the grounds too wet....my horse is allergic to fresh air...

i agree with that... me and my freind take turns if we cant get down some ones there.
i got banned from comming down before 6am.
which is helpfull when i start work at 6!!
i was only down at half 5 is that really really too early? so now my friend has to feed her

yes we should!!!

I was up at the yard on sunday at 8 and it was bliss - came back from ride at 10 and still no one about - left at 11 and peeps are starting to filter in - went back at 2 and the yard was DEAD - still lots of horses in the stable waiting to go out while mine has been out four hours and for a 2 hour hack!! People dont know there born do they ? most people wont ride with me as they think my 13.3 pony cant hack the hard faced rides they apparently go on .... but then discovered after following a handfull of rare riders out on a hack it was probably due to their shameful riding and shockingly spooky horses being totally impossible to ride - I do think alot of peeps on my yard secretly dont ride because they are terrified and dont have the balls to admit it!

i know.... theyre more interested in having someone come give there horse a massage than getting on it.
they feed them like kings and wonter why they cant handle them.
oh im getting madder and madder.

I know ....

I tell you what makes me laugh too - most of them are 'injured' and on box rest or turnout rest by advice of the vet but I swear that some of it is a cover up and excuse ... the vet was up at the yard the other day .... could hear him saying .... light hacking is a must , get her out and back in work now, nowt wrong with her do her good.... and then three hours later heard girl telling her mates, vet says another 6 weeks off , gutted ....... what a liar!! and what a waste of a horse!!!

Ahhh -- well we have good hacking with good little jumps here and there so all is ok on that part !!

Think I might ride tonight ...... nah ill giver her a bath and lunge instead!!! HA HA or I might even graze her in hand!!

I only ride at the weekends as I live in a different country for work during the week, I'm not a bad person don't hate me

I just ride April though, she's not mine. I ride out and I school every weekend, it's either that or no-one would ride her so its better than nothing. Have a flatwork lesson tonight and flying back to London at 5am 2moro so I can make it!!

Sounds like my yard we have 40 horses at the moment. Most of them ride at mine though they just don't compete(nothing wrong with that). I need to move as soon as I can afford it. I need like minded people to keep me motivated and to ride out with. Also lots of kids at my place!

no - there is nothing wrong with only riding at weekends - most peeps only get chance then but for some they dont even ride then!! Might as well keep a donkey if you arent going to ride it! or a nice rescue pony that need a good home :-) and there isnt anything wrong with not competing --- I dont !! Ha

no idont compete either... theres nothing wrong in just riding weekends...nothing wrong at all.
and nothing wrong with not being the most confident rider plenty of people on my yard arnt confident about cantering out riding and stuff....
its just those who have them and do nothing....taking up valuble stables which others who do ride could use and ride out with me!!
(not putting jumps up now friend is taking her youngster....who only lernt to jump yesterday with me...*priveliged*)

I know - there does seem to be a heck of a lot of 'overhorsing' going on - if you are going to ride once a blue moon and the odd show - get a nice retired veteran? It sad because you see alot of these wasted horses go down the pan and its normally because of lack of exercise adn owner experience! I am only 5ft 2 and I am not the most confident rider so what did I go and buy ? A nice small chirpy cob that could carry me everywhere and be a nice steady ride - and she is enough for me - granted she can be a diva to handle although I have pretty much sorted this now But you need to stick to your level dont you?

We have alsort of mismatches at our yard .... one 56 year woman who has a 5 year old ID, the horse is green and needs riding due to arthritis :-( and the woman has osteoparosis and darent go faster that walk as if she fell off would probably break summat! Why does she have him? the poor horse is wonderful ansd her stupidity is ruining his health and his behavior! also a complete novice rider who has bought a very bargy dressage mare for her first horse - saw her leading it up the road yesterday in the traffice with tack on - she had been crying - poor lass tried to help but she wouldnt have any of it!! Tis a mad world !!!

We have a very mixed bunch at our yard, but only a few dont ride as such.
We all go at odd times really, so you 'think' no-ones riding but theyve been already or are going later on etc.
There's about 5/6 people I can hack out with regularly. Its really nice, I love my yard!!

I used to be on a yard that had about 50 odd liveries and i am so glad i moved but thats a whole nother story altogether (was wicked when i was a kid though).

Anyway we have 8 horses on our yard, one is semi retired as he is in his 20's and has a tendon injury and one pony doesn't get ridden very often as i think the little girl is starting to grow out of horses but she still rides a few times a week and the rest of us ride nearly everyday and compete at weekends. Everyone on tha yard has their own transport too apart from me but my friends takes me out with her occassionally.

I dont think i could be on a yard where no-one rode as i dont think i would be able to motivate myself.

this is true.... i think its going to become that horse cruelty isnt just starvation its over feeding under working and over stabling.... they dont ride them....they dont turn them out what? what are they doing with it apart from sending it insane?
rugs on all year round.... horses never get the sun on their backs. i dont know.
mine comes in in winter is fed pony nuts and chaff.
the only supliments i put in is garlic and veg oil.
and if she can be turned out she is!
ponies stabled all winter kids ride them once a month... would it hurt for the pony to be hairy?

did you end up selling murphy? i hope not he's a cracking horse id like something bigger. id also like a horse box...
whats a university student to do. i hate being poor, mildred literaly takes 50% of my wages. thats why i insist on riding haha

What annoys me is people who hardly ever ride their horse but are really rich so have a really nice horse and a decent trailer/lorry, then they take it to a ODE or similar and surprise surprise the horse goes lame! Oh I wonder why, prehaps because it's not fit enough! Then of course they moan that they won't be ableto ride for ages and their horse is accidnet prone/ an invalid, when it's all their fault! Grrrr.
