Right, not advertising - I am buying, not selling (well, maybe)

So 6 yr old mare - breeding unknown (large amount of TB)
Bright bay. Broken in as a 4 year old, done BSJA to discovery & BYEH (wasn't placed but jumped round 1m05). Only has about £50 on card

Sane but sharp - Hacks alone & in company, loads & will stand on wagon all day long.

Can be mareish (teeth!) in stable & has a couple of marks on legs - (old wire scars, bald not white)

what do you reckon?

So, no claims to fame on the breeding front - that drops it down a bit. £50 on her card might be about the most she'll EVER get - or MIGHT be the start of something big!

What will dictate her value is the likelihood that she has the scope to go on - her style over a fence, how careful she is, and how easy she is to jump - ie - would she suit a relatively inexperienced rider.

I sold one similar for a client 6 weeks ago -same age and height, slightly more desirable on the breeding side (by a half-way decent jumping stallion). She'd done virtually NO jumping before coming to us but quickly showed nice style and cleverness over jumps up to3'3". She probably had the ability to get to Foxhunter with the right rider but she was a bit 'tricky' to ride and handle and owner (who was in hospital at the time as a result of a handling accident with the mare) wanted a quick sale so she went to a good home and a capable rider for £2,500 with full disclosure of her quirks! With time and a bit more schooling, and an outing or two, we'd probably have asked £4,000 for her.

IF this mare you're interested in is genuine and looks to have the ability to go on, then £4,000 - to £5,000 might be a sensible price - presumably you've been quoted a price which MIGHT be the right price. It might be on the high side, suggesting the seller rates her - or suggesting the seller is nuts! On the information available, can't really judge what's 'right'! Any horse is only worth what the buyer will offer - and the seller will accept!

£1,500 at the most for a Tb as they are 10 a penny at the moment and its a buyers market. Always always make a cheeky offer and if your not happy with it walk away. My friend bought an ID x last week (again 10 a penny at the moment). Big stamp of a horse they wanted £5,000 for it and she got it for £2,500 he is bomb proof and jumps anything so she is using him for hunting next season as he is a fantastic hunter. As people have no money at the moment its not a case of how much they can get for their horses its a case of cant keep them for another year due to the cost of keeping them and then making sure they go to a good home not just a dealer. You can tell genuine sellers as they make sure the homes they are going to are good, well at least as good as they can.

Decent ones aren't!! And I'm certainly not giving away good horses for derisory sums. For a big, bombproof IDx that jumps anything, suitable for hunting, £5,000 is a fair price and if the seller took half that there's a reason!! (And I hope your friend doesn't find that her 'bargain' was actually an expensive mistake! )

I've just started backing one of my 3 year year olds for a buyer who has been looking for a really nice IDx - 4-5 years old - for several months and couldn't find one that didn't have 'issues' or that would pass the vet!!

There may be the odd seller so desperate to sell that they'll take peanuts - I know of one very nice mare for sale whose price has been dropped by several thousand after it failed the vet (almost certainly shouldn't have) and which has a few teensy issues - but only with current nervous and rather novice owner!! But genuine, good horses are selling at respectable prices!

If her jump has nice potential, then I'd say around 2.5-3k?

Janet - really helpful, thank you - gives me a bit of a view. I agree with you on the breeding - is a shame she is unknown.
She is forward going (a bit sharp) and needs quiet rider, but is careful & quick and possibly has potential to get to Fox. She's advertised (I think to sell) at £3k which I think is reasonable.

I know TBs are 10 a penny at the mo, but £1,500 is a bit rude to ask for IMO (she's not a racer straight off the track) I know you don't ask you don't get, (and I agree, if you do get then maybe there is a reason!)

but I am thinking 2.5k really.
