OH just doing trugs and nets and yelled my name - nearly had a heart attack as he never shouts me. Thought something had happened to one of the ponies - then he said quick it’s a hedgehog on the patio!! Looked out of the bedroom window and sure enough a huuuuge hedgehog?. That’s cheered me up no end.

If a hedgehog is out during the day and not a nursing mum .. then it’s in trouble and dying. Please give shallow bowl of water and hedgehog food. Either dry from the pet store. Or pedigree chum. My friend rescues hogs and has over 60 at the moment. All brought in as found during the day dying from thirst and hunger. As the ground is so hard they cannot dig for worms etc. and are usually covered in fleas and ticks and suffering with lung worm. They have been dying with this drought and high temperatures. My one that I have in my garden is eating a whole can of pedigree chum at night.

Thankfully this was dark, just gone 10pm. I have been leaving bowls of water out for sometime. Only food I had last night was calciworms and they have all been eaten. Will get some hedgehog food now I know for sure we have them.

We had a youngster come into our lounge, climbed over the patio threshold and just sat curled up on the dirt catcher mat as it must have got a whiff of the dog.

I couldn't believe my eyes, nor could my partner. The dog didn't know what to make of it!

Yes. Any hog food from
Pet store. But canned pedigree chum is their favourite. X

Well Mr hog ate up last night! I can see this is going to get expensive along with all the birds lol! My feed bins contain very little pony food (only balancer) and the rest is full of bird food and will now be hog food!! Not complaining - love them?

Our local hedgehog rescue uses go cat dry food and water as a must . Ours are breeding and fat and healthy and rescue was very happy with our care.

ive put dry kitten food and wet cat food down over the years, giving them a choice at first. They always prefer the dry so that’s what they get

I never get the hog food sold on shops as have seen several rescues saying it’s a con.

I’m going to get a few different cat foods to try out. The calciworms were bought by my husband by mistake- I’d asked him to get mealworms for the birds but the birds here wouldn’t eat them. When I Googled calciworms it says it was safe for hogs so that’s all I had available. Looks like I’ll have to stay up late to catch a glimpse.

Oh no fetlock I feel awful now. I had Googled calciworms as I couldn’t understand why the birds wouldn’t eat them but read that they were safe for hogs but not to feed mealworms. Off now to buy kitten food. Thanks for alerting me to this. This forum is so useful.

It's only from following that account and another on FB that I know x

I think cat food with a high meat content is best but mine just gets what my own cat gets - Royal Canin. I do grab the odd box of kitten food for them too though. Higher in calories, it's better to build them up before winter and hibernation.

A bit gutted at the moment, not having seen any signs of my own resident hog for a week now. It's the highlight of each day, sitting outside on a bench every night, watching it scurrying round the garden, eating and drinking.

My friend who runs the hedgehog rescue. And I have one in my garden. Feed pedigree chum. Either loaf or with gravey. It’s cheaper. And they prefer. No to meal worms.

Watch out that any kitten food does not have milk products in them . Hogs are lactose intolerant my rescue place warned me.
Who would have thought it was as complicated feeding hogs as it is feeding horses ?

The pet milk you can buy is safe for them, I help my friend quite a bit with her hedgehog rescue and we often use the milk for the baby hogs as you can feed it by syringe.

Do they need supplementary feeding just now? Plenty of slugs/snails etc in my garden. I don’t mind feeding them if it will benefit them though.

I think they only eat slugs (which may give them lungworm) if they're starving and desperate. Food is in scarce supply for them at the moment so if you have any in your garden definitely feed them and leave fresh water in a shallow bowl out for them too.
