I have been having issues with my great big lump of a haflinger (I love her really). When I first got her I would tap her on the hock and she would hold up a foot, then one day she realised that A) I had the cheek to not feed her a pony nut each and every time and B) I was weak, especially my bad arm that had been broken, and that I couldn't really make her do it if she didn't want to, then the farrier came and she was a complete nightmare, and things only got worse from there.
Happily, my arm has mostly recovered and I have a handy OH to come along when he can and play at clicker training (I find it hard on my own without him being the treat vending machine but we're getting to that stage now). We did this today and she was perfect! Yes I have had to start feeding her pony nuts again but I am starting to not care about that, whatever, I just want to pick out her feet and have the farrier come without getting flattened or kicked (being shorter but extremely muscular she has the power of a tank)! She is pretty much good in every other way, respectful etc its just this that was a problem!
Also done a bit of the same with new welshie who was a fine example to the biggun!
