so i think we can all breath a sigh of relief we managed to get to the end (i think) of sweet itch season and i have to say paddy is looking pretty good he has a tail and 95% of his mane :D:D

so i thought i would celebrate with this post yipppeeee!!!!

sadly :( we are going into mud fever season and paddy being paddy he does not want to miss out on anything so here we go again :(

Drink anyone??????
Make mine a large :p:p

I did with one of mine, however other one caught cellulitis in her back and got very itchy from it so hogged herself right at end of season wasnt even to do with sweet-itch just her being very itchy on back and neck from infection.

Yes! We've survived too ....... just, as these last few hot days have been not helpful!!! Tho' I did manage to turn mine out when it was blowing a hooley. He DID enjoy himself, went rolling in sheeps turd and got it all over his white bits (is a piebald with more white than black), his long-suffering "mum" was not impressed!

The worst thing has been putting on his hoody when he's sweating up underneath it; he desperately needs a clip - is being done next Monday, so think I can confidently predict that the weather will definitely change as from Monday night!!! Ooooh, I'm just raring for some nice crisp mornings (and evenings) with NO MIDGES!!!! Blimmin things.

We still have loads of midges couldn't believe it, hacking back to the yard last night and they seemed to appear from no where was awful.

So pony is still out in his boett :( have had to have it on him till the end of october before. More always seem to appear just when they seem to have gone.

We have survived too! Got some mane missing as I have just has Saffy for over a year and she didn't show signs of sweet itch until it was a bit too late. I bought her the pagony sweet itch rug and will use it all next year and hopefully avoid any itchiness.

MiJodsR2BlinkinTite - do you clip yourself, I have bought myself some clippers but need someone to help/teach me the first time - any Devon recommendations. Also, went riding on Tuesday and both cobs were very hot and sweaty should I clip now or wait a bit?

we have a few on my yard that are going to be done soon. i would not think my horse has enough coat to clip but then he was grand last year so fingers crossed i don't need to this year although his feathers might need a trim when it gets really wet

we still have flies but the rest have buzzed off hehehehe see what i did there :D lol

Well done everyone, your methods of controling the SI sound like they really worked!

There is a youngster at my yard that has just been diagnosed with it and i was wondering if you could give me any tips on it to pass on to the owner for next year?

Hi Katherine 1975. Noooo, I don't clip myself, did once and the poor horse looked like a rescue case, so never ever again!

I've got a friend who's coming Monday night. Depends where you are? There's someone based in Torquay area that does it, I've got her contact details if you want, tho' have never used her only spoken on phone.

I'll PM you OK.

oh - has anyone heard of Listerine being a good tonic???

Tips from me - NEVER EVER take the fly rug off - not even for a day!!!
Benzyl Benzoate to sooth.
a good fly repellent - i like Barrier super plus (avacado one)
a good fly mask for my girl keeps the forelock on
and give them a good itch once in a while - it must be hell!

Oh no! I did think it was early, but thought it was just round here that was still midgy. I'm le aving the rug on til mid Oct. I usually take it off just in time for mud rash season! Oh aren't horses fun!

i am not able to put paddys rug back on he got really bad rug rub from it
i know he is scratching but there are not many flies so not sure whats making him itch

Hm, I haven't noticed any midges at the new yard, so fingers crossed! LL didn't suffer at all whilst on his extended holiday (it really was LL friendly :D), so I am under strict instructions not to let him get either sweet itch or laminitis . Fingers crossed the new yard holds up :D

OP - mud fever. Yuck. Horrible stuff :(. I take it you plaster on the gunky stuff (name escapes me - I want to say pig sulphur, but have no idea if that's right!). We tried the turnout boots on Big Cob. Complete waste of money :( Tried them on Tiggy and on Dizzy, but nope, slip down and mud gets up inside.

Sorry to hear Paddy is still suffering bless him :( It is disheartening isn't it ((hug))

It also seems to me that there are more horses suffering from it this year  There is a gelding on my yard that has it this year for the first time :(

MrsM you are thinking of Pig Oil and Sulphur :D

I use pig oil on its own on Bella's feather and found that worked well last winter. Didn't stop the mud sticking ( clay mud and I should have applied more often I think :o ) but she didn't get mud fever which is what I was really trying to prevent. Had lovely soft hair too :p :D
