It looks as though we have a dry warm spell starting Monday and so I have told everyone the horses will be going out 24/7. Yippee!

We have far too much grass and they have been confined to small paddocks which I will gradually expand as the grass is eaten down. But it looks like they should have enough this year to last into Autumn, even being out 24/7. Last year they went out 24/7 but I had to feed haylage in the fields all summer as it was so dry.

Just hope this weather doesn't change its mind again.

Usually i'm pretty relaxed about the weather : Snows? they get hay. Rains? They get wet/ rugs on. Cold? They'll survive.

This year i've become a bit desperate about grass :o. I can count on my fingers the number of days it's been above 10degrees here and the grass just isn't growing. Average temp is about 6 degrees. My water buckets where frozen the other morning. :( It's NEARLY JUNE and i'm having to feed 3 good doers on 8acres hay:eek:

It needs to warm up a bit :( And dry up a little. I don't want scorching summer, just over 15 degrees please! And no more flooding. Not too much to ask for May surely?

Not allowed 24hr turnout at our stables - please may I come and live at your yard?!:D

It's been very cold here too, though obviously not as cold as where you are. I reseeded and fertilzed the grass whilst it was really warm in March and then of course we had loads of rain which watered it all well in and so we've never had so much grass. Problem is, due to the weather it hasn't been eaten down and so we now have too much! I never get it right. I probably won't fertilize next year and I'll end up with too little. Can't win really.

I love having them out 24/7. But unfortunately it isn't possible all year round as the ground won't take it. I don't understand yards not allowing it at all though. The paddocks can take it during the summer and if there's not enough grass horses can be fed hay in the fields or brought in for a net.

It really is cold up in Scotland. Even a couple degrees warmer would help. So far it's rarely gone above the 'grass growing' point, so fertiliseing will have little effect.

Our grass shot up in march too but was really a bit too dry to explode. And they've now eaten all that :(

If it doesn't warm up soon hay is going to be a real problem this winter.

Know how you feel kallibear - my horses are still on hay - we have very little grass - usually we have plenty by now - off work today and it is 5 degrees and wet and windy - rubbish!
