Hi, I'm Lydia, I'm 19 and I've been involved with horses on and off all my life. After loaning for a considerable amount of time I decided it was right to buy one of my own. I bought Dottie, my now 4 year old mare who I broke in over the spring (2013). She is amazing and coming on really well with her schooling, but is ultimately my baby happy hacker. So, on Friday after speaking to some people I know, I managed to get myself involved with a complicated situation about a yearling with no home, soooo I said I'd give her one. She is beautiful but she is untouched. I know I have a big job on my hands but I definitely believe I am capable of the job, with the equine help I'm surrounded with here, at home and at the yard. So really I am asking for anyone who has had a yearling, to share their experiences, halter training tips and skills with me :-) & also, she needs a name! I can't figure out how to add a picture but she is a cheeky looking palomino fine cob X to make 15.1/2. Thanks everybody! X

Get Sarah Westons book, No fear no force. It was a great help to me. Also if you can I would stable her for a while as this will help with handling. Good luck

Barbie would be my tongue in cheek name, sorry.

Totally agree about restricting her for a few days at least to get her to know and learn to trust you; you can't be all bad if you take her food and drink.

Stable her. Book a few days off work. Find a deckchair, a book, a flask of coffee and some chocolate.

Park yourself in the stable and take no notice of her. Curiosity will soon take over and when she comes to you don't move, just let her touch you, smell you and possibly even lick you if she is brave enough. When she realises you are no threat to her you will be able to start work with her.

The first few pages of my thread 'My Next Equine Project' has some points and experiences on handling a feral youngster, you may find bits of it useful. I would call her The Yellow Bird.

Haha paloma!!

Paloma faith as her posh name and faith as a stable name?!

Advice); patience. And ask lots of options and form your own....!

I have a 3 year old who can be an arse but patience is the key!!! :)

'Being Blonde'
Princess
Cheese 'n' Crackers

(like Paloma!)

Time, patience and you'll soon win her over. Agree with others, stable her. Use a leather headcollar, with a dangly and keep it on. Use a slightly bigger one to 'practice' catching her, taking it off and putting it back on as many times as you like. When you have haltered her, and get to the process of leading, use a long line. Take little steps, and praise. Try not to treat her though, as it may encourage nipping. Keep voice commands straight to the point, ' walk on', rather than waffling and muttering - until she gets it, then you can mutter and waffle all you like!! Wear hat and gloves, and if possible don't let go if she is naughty - only they often try to do it again!

Good luck, sure you'll be fine.

I can't give you any advice for bringing her on, but here are some name ideas!

Golddust (Goldie)
Sundance (Sunny/ Dancer)
Shimmer
Amber
Echo
Malibu (Boo)
Summer
Dollar (Doll)
Breeze

Good luck and let us know what name you choose! :)

Solstice Gold
or
Yuletide Chance

When it comes to leading her out in hand, be sure to let anyone you happen to meet know that she is young and still learning. I found a lot of people appreciated being told why my yearling was staring at them, and most were keen to help make sure he had positive first encounters. Including a very considerate man mending a fence behind a parked van, who took a minute to step out where he could be seen as well as heard :)

Thankyou for everyone's suggestions for names and advice with her! My nerves are lessening now! She is being delivered to me next Saturday so I have the week to buy everything in preparation! I will let you all know how it goes!

I am going to call her Mishka Mulan-Moon (or just Mishka as her stable name) A bit whacky I know lol!

Thanks again, any further tips are much appreciated too! Xxx
