Could anybody kindly give me some advice. I'm going to look at a yearling. Realistically how much can I expect to see at this young, gangily stage. What can I expect to see it do? It's not your usual go, try, ride. Is there anything in particular I should ask the breeder? I've never looked at anything young before, only ridden horses. Also, how close to it's fully grown height is it at a yearling. EG if it's expected to make, say, 16hh+ what sort of height would it be now? Thank you.

it should lead well
easy to put on and take off headcollar
good to brush/groom
easy to pick up feet and pick out feet all round
be happy to have you put a thumb in it's mouth - i.e. been wormed with a syringe wormer
look like it's feet have been regularly attended to by a farrier

take it to an arena
it should be happy to have a trot/canter round (and a bit of a buck if it's fresh) but should have a happy/interested outlook
even if it's never done it - see it's reaction to a pole on the ground - it may jump it - it may freak out - it may do anything
see how quick it is to learn and how 'bold' it is to take on something new.

see it trotted up in hand

run your hands all over it - under it's tummy etc

lead from both sides

height - to make 16hh /16.1 my yearling was about 14.3 to 15hh at a year old

then the usual things about straight legs, hoof line wrt pastern line, depth of girth,

Absolutely agree with everything that Airdale has said. Perhaps with the exception of height. We meausured our yearling yesterday who is 14.3 in front - 15hh behind. We recon that he will be close on 16.3hh when fully grown if not bigger. But it's always a guessing game.

Make sure you see him trotted towards you and away from you and that he is moving well and straight.

How exciting

OMG - I hope you aren't right about the 16.3 bit !!!

yearling is now 2 and at 23 months he's already 15.2 in front and 15.3 behind and his mum was only 14hh

I think it depends very much on the hose
At 22 months mine was 15.2/15.3 35 months he's now 16.0hh. I don't expect him to go much above 16.1hh fully grown, although I will keep hoping he makes 16.2

no - you should also handle the horse and see how he/she responds to being handled by a stranger - but you must send +ve vibes to this baby and not be nervous of them when you do handle it

after all - if you buy this yearling it'll be just you and him/her when you get them home - so be a good test to see if it's going to take the P or mind it's Ps&Qs

But I'm also going on the size of the parents and the breeding. ISHxHanxTB. Mum 16.3, dad 16.1...........

Don't panic

Ok. Will do as much as I can from your list & let breeder do some so I can watch her move etc.

Re size : She's standing at 14.3hh at moment 12 months & they hope her to make 16hh +. I'm hoping she's gonna make that as well.

Should be approx 90% of finale height by the time its a year old. Confirmation and temparement are important. Can you see its Dam and Sire. it will be 80%approx of its mother so was she nice. Will it do the job you want it to do.
good luck

Mine was 2y.o on the 24th of March and is standing a touch over 16.1hh at the withers now! By the rope test which I did earlier she's only supposed to make 16.2hh, breeder said she'd be 16.1hh as a 4y.o.

it will reflect in the price , if its not been handled much expect it to be cheap, on the onther hand if its good blood lines and kind, walked out in traffic maybe .size wise my 12mth old shire xtb is 15 hands now and she will grow to 16-17 hands, i no if i wanted to sell my baby she would be dear, poss 2500. ha but thats me being a greedy cow,....

I'd want 4k for my 2y.o so that makes me especially greedy!
