My colt is approaching 1yr next month, he is living out with 4 others, 3 of which are mares. He was due to be gelded end of feb but vet could only find one testicle which was very high up, vet said to leave it for a few months and keep checking to see if it has dropped. So far no sign, bit concerned as hes living with mares but so far showing no interest at all and is very much acting a baby still.........just hoping it drops asap!! vet says he is highly unlikely to show an interest/impregnate mares whilst his testicles have not dropped.
Did anyone elsse have this? if so how long did they take to drop??

i have an 11 month old with the same problem, though he has a hernia so will be going into the hospital for surgery to remove that and will be gelded at the same time (droped or not) will be intresting to see what people say all the same though.

What breed is he? I've found traditional breeds sometimes take a while to drop the second one.
I would however be worried about him being out with mares in case he does get them pregnant.

Hes a welsh sec D, yes am thinking of moving him asap and finding a gelding to keep him company!

My Section D dropped at 8-9 months. My coloured colt had only one testicle down at one year old, the second dropped at 18 months. He will be gelded late this autumn as its now getting too warm and the flies are out.

my traditional didnt drop till he was over a year, can take up to 4 years to drop some of them. On the plus side, mine got so used to me checking to see if they'd dropped he never has an issue with people feeling around down there, helpful for when he needs cleaning!

Even with one testicle he can get the mares pregnant, if it doesn't drop he will need to go vet hospital to have it removed, as it can cause cancer. Did in my lab, results came back 10% chance of cancer returning and yes it came back big time 3 years later and all because I was stupid and thought it didn't matter that it hadn't dropped, until several years later when it started to grow as it was cancerous. And I lost not only a very good dog, but my shadow, am still heartbroken 6 years later all because I was stupid.

Had another feel today - (hes ever so good) and one has firmly dropped now, you can see it - the other i cannot feel. I am planning to seperate him in a few weeks from the mares, also one mare has come into season and he isnt reacting atall, one of the geldings is showing more interest. Colt is still playing a baby, checked them before and hes still teamed up with my coloured mare, grazing together very much apart from the other 3 horses.

Sounds very much like my colt... could only feel one at about 18 months and can now feel both (just) at 22 months. We only took him away from the mares a month or so ago as he was still very foalish. It's amazing how they suddenly become coltish, so you'll definately know when you need to separate them :)

I wouldn't worry that the second one hasn't dropped yet as he's still young, but if you are at all worried you should consult your vet.

Hmm - I might be imagining things but at 9 months we have one , next day we have 2 and the next none again !!! what is he up to

Interested re hernea op we have a 3 finger one - I hope this makes sense , showing no signs of lifting itself dispite a daily poke

They have dropped! i checked yesterday.
Under vet advice he is being cut on tuesday :) i know its the wrong time of year but its not practical to wait, vet said should be fine to do it now before it gets any hotter, flies are not bad where he is kept.
