Yearling heights!

Hi all just curious to know the size of your horses when they were yearlings compared to how big they stand now as an adult! Many thanks!

I reckon on about 2hands from yearling height
Mine is 13.2 now and predicted to mature to 15.2. My last homebred is 15.2 and he was a similar size at this age (June foals)

Once over a year old, they don't grow any more leg, so the string test works. After about 6 months, the lower leg doesn't grow, so measuring the knee to coronet band in inches is very close to correct

Mine is approx 15hds, his full sister was the same, both predicted to be over 17ds . Thats what the string test is teasing me with anyway. to be fair its accurately predicted all the others within an inch or 2.

A lot depends on the breed and also breeding. I had a 14hh mare I put to a 16hh stallion. She had a filly that made the same size as her mum. Next foal was by a 15.3hh anglo-arab. A colt this time who made 16hhs. Repeated the mating and got another colt who made a lightweight 15hhs.

But what height were they as yearlings?

Not certain as this was back in the 70's but around 13.2 I think. The filly just didn't grow after 2. The first colt that made 16hhs grew on after 4, his brother didn't.

13.3hh as a yearling, matured to 15.1hh.

13.3 and a bit at 15 months, 16 hands at 6 years

A lot of factors go into how much a horse will grow .I find newborns foals give you a better idea on how big they will be as adults big foals your have a big horse 16-17.3 hands small foals 13-15.3 hands depending on high of parents . If a yearling is over 13.3 you’re going to have a very big horse. The string test is also a good way to determine a future hight of a horse .
