Apologies for a longish post from a newbie.

I have a 16 month old gelding who I wanted to take to Futurity... unfortunately he had an abscess not long before and I couldn't risk entering him for him not to be going so I had to miss out on that one

It was probably a blessing as he was a little weedy at the time.
There is a foal show with 2 classes that he can enter in a couple of weeks time and I want to take him to it. This leads me to ask a few questions as he is my first youngster and I would hope that all the lovely people on here might impart a little knowledge and help me out!

I have trimmed him, pulled his mane, bathed him and taught him to tie and trot up. He's loaded quite a few times (well, walked through numerous times without hesitation)
He looks well too.
So questions... I'd like to know whether he should be bitted or not.

And, are there any particular plaits that would help his neck out at all.

If I opt for an in-hand bridle is there a particular style he should be in? I'm not keen on the ones with yellow stitching I keep seeing everywhere.
The dentist saw him a few weeks ago and said he had a displaced tooth so I suspect bitting him will be out of the question.

The classes will be Welsh Part Bred (unaffiliated, local show) and yearling horse. Whilst he will make a horse (eventually) he is going to be the smallest in the class I suspect!

I will be wearing light trousers, tweed jacket yellow/cream shirt, tie and navy hat. Does that all sound ok?

Pics of him (ignore me being in all the wrong clothes- there was a reason) in case you can see anything I can improve on

Thankyou for your reply. Struggling to find a totally plain one though on my very limited budget.

Sure i'll find something eventually!

Thanks again

I brought one of my yearlings in recently so get out to a few shows for experience. His first show I didnt bit him before hand due to lack of him, so showed him in a bitless in hand bridle. I know he looks a bit dopey but this is the bridle (with a coloured brow band as he was in a hack class)

I bitted him for his 2nd show and again just swopped the browband as needed

That is what I am looking for with a plain browband

Thanks for posting the pics. Don't suppose you know where you had it from?
I saw something at a big show last month and had the saddler write down what it was so i could order it again. I found the bit of paper and it was a filly slip so not the same thing i'm guessing. You can see I am rather clueless with this it being my first time.

ETS I found the thing I had written down...

Pat, that would be brilliant if you had. He's a pony size at the moment in his normal headcollar.

Don't worry if not but that would be great if you did

I'll take pic's of the two I have with measurements and you can take your pick then pm your address. Might be an hour or so, so don't faint holding your breath! I haven't any brass browbands (ask SN what I think of them!) but do have padded ones as well if you need them.

Here you go!
The narrower one is Havanna, the wider one is almost black. They both measure 36" from bottom 'bit' ring over the head to bottom of other side. The Havanna one is 5/8" wide, the other 1" wide. I have a dark tan of the wider one which has a longer headpiece if necessary (I have a leather headcollar fetish!

) You'd have to put something like a rubber band on the headpiece to stop the browband slipping down on the offside. Lots of people use them this way for showing foals around here when you don't want a bit in.
If any of them are any help, you're welcome to borrow them.
Just seen your reply, will sort out b/bands and send them all down, will be easier for you to pick what will suit then (if you have a h/c of course!)

Those look great

From his head shot which would you think would suit him better? And are you sure you don't mind lending something brand new?!
crazy.gif
I'll obviously take good care but won't mind if you have something well used that would be ok instead

As long as you don't mind covering the postage it would probably be easiest to send them both down so you can have a proper play and mix and match.
Of course you can borrow them, I wouldn't have offered otherwise! I've all sorts around the country atm; Tophorse has my Bonner Bandage, that's reminded me, must get that back now! OuigaBoard has a pile of books, JetSet has a foal rug and SN is always dipping in! I'd rather it was used than languishing in the cupboard just because I'm a hoarder!
PM your address details and I'll get it to the P/O tomorrow if you'd like them. You can chuck the postage in when you send them back.
