After buckets and buckets of rain has fell last night went up this morn and Rio was shivering and miserable!! so brought him in gave his brekkie a straw rub down and left in for the day anyhow went back tonight still chucking buckets *honestly it hasnt stopped* well put him and pony back out for a hour or so and he was back at the gate wanting to come in so they are in for the night now :D anyhow was hoping that the youngster would rough it "rugless" over winter do you think he will?? or is he just struggling from a true overnight soaking??

My little one shivers in the rain but is warm as houses otherwise. Bought her a lightweight turnout just to throw on her when we're due lots of rain.

I think its when they get soaked through they're bad!

Before i get shot down by the "you shouldn't rug until November Brigade" Maybe you could pop a lightweight or rain sheet on him and whip it off in the morning if you still want to leave him out overnight, and see if he still feels cold in the morning.

See how it goes, all of ours are getting winter coats in, the old boy is rugged,
just cos I worry about him getting cold and wet, the other three are still naked and quite happy, one of which is a yearling filly, I just keep monitoring them, they are getting to like their ears felt.

Yes I think he has struggled with the ammount of rain!! but worried about putting rugs on taking off ect ect..saying I want him to rough it at winter he will be in overnight out during the day with field shelter..he did have no acess to the f/s last night though!!

I try to keep an eye on the weather forecast and if lots of rain is forecast I put my horses rain sheets on as its when they get soaked through and windy they get cold.
I know its not necessary, but just because a horse can survive without a rug, why make them?
As for the dont rug till November brigade, they better shoot me now, all 4 of mine now have rain sheets on pretty much all the time, I see little point in them getting soaked for the sake of it ! and 2 of them are cobs, an even bigger sin ;)
My horses...........my way :)
I'd personally stick a rain sheet on them, they are clearly cold if shivering, we shiver in an attempt to keep warm just the same way, you'd no doubt pop a coat on if shivering yourself x

The 2yo filly where my share is was shivering today, i felt a bit mean. But we want her to be mostly rugless over winter, she is going to be living out on a hill with lots of trees as shelter. But at the moment there's only a hedge and it's not very good shelter. I did bring the boys in so i could let the girls in the field shelter and gave them some hay in there and they soon warmed up. In fact, they went back out into the rain again of their own accord so it can't be too traumatic. My understanding is that as long as they don't have a problem keeping wieght on, they will be fine with the odd shiver? It's hard to think that when you see them shivering away though :( If he's cold, his coat might fluff up quicker? And produce more oil to make him more waterproof? Apparently Soya oil is fab for making their coats waterproof and keeping weight on in the cold.

If your youngster is shivering then rug. Although hopefully all will be fine now that he has access to his field shelter.
