my filly's mane is really long and a mess basically.
even getting the tugs out she hates it and acts worse than my 6 year old daughter when i'm brushing her hair!
what i would like to know is, will she become less sensitive when she gets older?
or am i now a proud owner of a horse who i will either have to sedate to pull her mane or just have to make do with solo combing and using thinning scissors?

i have ordered a solo comb to tackle her mane for now, but i do prefer pulling manes

unfortunately some horses are very sensitve with theyre manes, a friend of mine uses primrose oil and hot towels to open pores

solo comb is the way to go. my yearling has not taken to pulling and i cannot be doing with getting flattened everytime i try (she even got jumpy about just having her mane combed).
i too prefer pulled manes but i prefer staying in one piece more!

My show pony mare (it would have to be the one I show) hates her mane being touched. I have had her since she was a foal and she is now 6.

I gave up attempting to pull it years ago and now use a combination of a solo comb and various thinning items. She still objects by shaking her head and stamping her feet but we get it done.

On the other hand my 5 year old, who again I have had since a foal loves having her mane and tail pulled!

They are all different!

Its a difficult one to be honest, personally I would rather consider sedating or using a twitch as i really dont like solo combs. I fins that over time they actually cause the mane to go really thick and horrible and especially with a youngster it may mean that if you start doing it now it could have an uncontrollable mane in time which would be even harder to control.

I have this problem with my now 3yr old filly. We use scissors (I know...

) to take the length off followed by a tail rake - once you get the hang of it the mane looks 'pulled'

What I want to know is which smart *ss invented mane pulling in the first place ?!?

i tried a rake type thing that my boss has, think it's actually for use on a dogs undercoat? it's got several small blades on it.
anyway she hated that too.
i might try the sedalin route or just risk life and limb to pull it

Get some clove oil and massage it thoroughly into the roots of the mane, get some scissors and chop out any knots/dreds (there probably aren't any, but if there is, don't bother trying to save that hair). Leave it a few minutes (if it were me, I may sedate before putting the clove oil on) and then start to gentley comb out and gradually introduce her to pulling. Don't attempt to do it all at once and don't stick to one area.

ETS - the clove oil numbs the roots! Rather like chewing on a clove for tooth ache. Honestly, this works!

thanks, like the sound of trying that. plus i do love the smell of clove oil

i also might try and do a bit whilst she's eating as she is oblivious to anything going on when there's grub
