Hi, I am new to the forum but have been reading the very informative breeding section about everyones experiences for a week or two now.:)
Basically I was wondering if anyone out there as experienced a mare in foal having the yellow mustard (season like) discharge marks (only about 4 marks around her lady bits and down her leg) at 38 weeks in foal?
She is fine on herself and is eating/drinking bombing about etc. and there is plenty of movement from inside.
A new gelding arrived at the yard today and I was wondering if this may have caused it...but surely at such a late sage in pregnancy she would not come into season??
Any thoughts advice would be greatefully appreciated.:D

:) Hello.....
I did see a post on here last week (i think) with photo's about a mare owner experiencing this problem with her mare also, I will look for the post.

Hi Gucci_b,
Thank you for your reply and link. I had read this myself and was like you not sure whether or not the mare was in foal....will see how my mare is tomorrow but after a lot of thought and reading various things I am thinking it is more likely that the new gelding as caused her to show these symptons. Apparently mares can show signs of seasons throughout pregnancy. Will be keeping a very close eye on her and will let you know how we get on.:):):):)

Hi Tempi, Thank you for your reply. Mare still ok this morning feeling a bit better about things now. Suppose they are just like us humans in that department :D

Abby has had seasons all the way through :o I was do upset when she was like this and had the vet about 2 months ago and he said all was well and that 15-20% of mares show heat throughout and also she wee's infront of a visiting gelding, vet said this is a submission act aswell. Shes never straight forward :o She has always been mucky down there too (before and throughout) and he said this is normal too. She is well in herself and its not an alarming colour and we had blood test and all was well. I would not worry to much ;)

Hi me_n_super_abby, Thank you for your reply I am pretty convinced this is all it is (a seasonal display) but to be on the safe side vet coming out tomorrow so will keep every one updated. Her vulva does look a bit puffy though and her udder as dropped but not filling and definately no signs of milk or discharge from anywhere. She is a maiden mare and looks massive because she is quite short coupled being a pure arabian. At the end of the day the foal has to fit somewhere and with her it is outwards resembling a barrell. Will try and get some pictures and upload them when I have a spare hour or two lol!!
Thanks to everyone:D

No probs ALS. Let us know what the vet says as i will also be interested. I started a thread in this section for pics of soon to be mums, be great to see your girlie on there :D

Will get some photos weather permitting and try and get them on for weekend. I have some from early december when it had snowed and to be honsest looking at your thread with the mums to be she looked like she was due too foal then. Her mother was the same (we did not own her) but have photos from her in foal and she is hugeeee!:D

Vet been this lunch time. Temparature, lungs, vulva, udder and teats all ok. No more mustard marks and baby doing a belly dance while been examined.
The vet told me there was no need for concern and to just to keep my eye on her and probably caused with the new gelding on the yard:D
Feel much better now!

i was just checking for updates whilst looking busy at work!

Phew, glad to hear all is well. Im relieved for myself too as abby has shown signs of discharge/dirty bits! Even though my vet said it was ok i still worry (first time granny to be) :o

I think i would start worrying too if they had a temp or early udder development or dirty discharge/blood  i think what ours are doing is quite normal and we have dirty mares :p

But glad to hear you are reassured (and me too) they are a worry, sometimes i think why do i do it, then i see her big donkey head over the door and think ahhh thats why

Thank you :) Really will have second thoughts about putting her in foal again it is so stressful when you think something is not right. That said though this is the only real concern I have had apart from when she was first scanned in foal with twins and they stopped the youngest one, the wait was quite stressful for the second scan but I think now that we have a formed baby and so far on things have got to me more. Dont get me wrong I am more than looking forward to the birth and foal but I am dreading the birth too. I am just so frightened things will go wrong even though we watched our friends shetland foal last year and I have births from reading and all the wrong positions, red bag etc imprinted in my brain and the vets number will be on speed dial:eek:
Does everyone else feel like this or am I just totally paranoid and OTT???

Pleased to hear all is well for you, it can be so stressful.

I sadly lost one at the weekend, 5 weeks before term :( - no signs of anything being wrong , before or after. Its a bitter pill to swallow, but luckily the absolute majority of the time we worry about what turns out to be nothing! I will be very grateful when the next few weeks are out of the way, and hope my other ladies stay safe and well!

No ME TOO!! Im completely neurotic!

Mugsgame, very sad to hear about your loss. Like you say very sad but lucklily it does not happen very often but when it does very very sad. I cant imagine how you must feel. Sending good vibes for your other ladies im sure they will all arrive safe and well, best wishes.

Oh Mugsgame how sad, I really do feel for you this is so terrible. I hope your other mares will be fine. This is my first time breeding and with a maiden so its new to both of us really. It is exciting but scary at the same time.

Me_n_super_abby I am glad it is not just me thats in cuckoo land:eek:

I don't feel like that but it's an annual thing for me so I just take it all in my stride. I think if you are overly concerned, which it sounds like you are, then the best thing to do would be to send your mare away to foal down at a stud with experience. Foaling is a wonderful event when all goes well but it can be catastrophic if it goes wrong and there's no-one experienced around to quickly deal with it.

Sorry to hear about your foal Mugsgame :(

Hi Spring Feather, Thank you, I agree with you that would be the best Idea but to be honest I want the experience of it all and know my vet and experienced foaling friend can get to me within twenty minutes if need be. MY trouble is the what if this happens and the other happens?....low self confidence I think. I just need a good kick up the bum:D

I have the stallion owner on stand by and I am sure she will talk me through anything should it go wrong if she cant get to us soon enough. Sure at the time I will not be in the same frame of mind that I am in now. I think its just the waiting that gives you the time to stress about things:)

ALS, the vast majority of all foals born, are so with no complications at all. Red bag deliveries are most breeders biggest worry. With red bags you have just a few minutes to get in there, figure out how the foal is positioned, and get it out as quickly as possible before it suffocates to death.

It is wise to study up on what to do if your mare does appear to be having a red bag delivery but in most cases the mares will foal without any problems.

Yep I have read up everything possible. Red bag, wrong presentation etc and watched videos. My husband as done so too. Placentitis was my mane issue with this thread... just being cautious after scaring my self silly that my mare had it after reading up on it.:D

I am exactly the same as you aLs. Abby has every illness going and its all been in my mind. Every little thing I panic. The internet is great but when you look for something you find it if that makes sense. I said my friend how stressful its been and abby won't be having another. The reply was abbys been fine its just you! I think its natural to worry as first timers. Can't wait and to see pics of your new baby. Good time are coming.

haha the owner of the stallion I used said she would be fine.:D I wouldnt have forgive myself though if she hadnt of been.
Must say I really like this forum as everyone seems really friendly which I find a bit of a novelty with horses:)
