So what is the best completely basic, ie: non-heating, low energy, no-fizz-inducing, low fat, chaff just to introduce a bit of fibre and bulk to a feed and to keep the gut moving, readily available from feed stores (in your opinion!)?

I also feed fast fibre, but just want something basic to go with it and reduce the slop factor a bit! (probably more for my benefit than my horse's!!!)

We use chaff all the time started with Gain Cool Chaff also tried Readigrass but now use both GreenGold dried grass and kehoe's garlic chaff they deliver direct to the door.

Thanks for the replies, but Hi-Fi and Greengold are Alfalfa (Lucerne), doesn't that send some horses loopy?
Not sure if I've seen Graze On for sale locally (I'm in the North West).
Mollichaff Calmer is partially Alfalfa.

Oh I just don't know what to do? He's been acting like a nob recently so I'm just trying to rule out any feed-induced silly behaviour. He's currently on Fast Fibre, some Mollichop which I'm about to run out of, and I put him on NAF Magic a couple of weeks ago. He seems to have chilled out a bit but has been getting over a slight injury so will be introduced back into some light work very soon and I don't want a repeat of my last experience with him (he tanked off with me)!

Sorry, Puppy, the website says their feeds are based on various things including alfalfa, but then the calmer doesn't mention that in it's contents - my fault for speecreading

Ossy chaff. They do a sugar free one. Chopped oat straw and hay. My cushings/lammi pony has it ad lib with no problems.

Sympathies with this one, I am confused as when I asked at the local feed merchant for a chaff without sugar ie NOT mollichaff they said 'hi-fi then..this sent my youngster loopy and I realise it the alfalfa which is a legume plant and not designed for horses forage at all..

Have a look at the Spillers chaffs. I have my girl on the conditioning one as she is TB and I have to keep weight on but they do a light and one for good doers. Take a look at the website.

onemoretime out of interest what else do you feed with it?

I've been wondering about trying my 7/8ths tb on it over summer to go with her balancer. She's currently on Winergy Equilibrium Condition but won't need this over summer - was wondering whether the Conditioning Fibre would maintain her weight without me adding anything else.

I bought a bag of oat straw chaff for my TB, she's a good doer but a hot head & I just wanted cheap, non-heating fibre.
I got a huge bag for £6.80 which has lasted her all winter, there's probably enough left for another month.
It's unbranded & comes wrapped in clear plastic, it might be worth a try if you're looking for cheap fibre.

For a start, take him off mollichop!! I cant stress enough how awful this stuff is, and so many people feed it! its thick with molasses. I don't know a horse who's been fed it that hasn't calmed down after they've been taken off it.
Ive fed Graze On and its fab stuff, just flash dried grass and my horses love it but it can send them a little excitable.
I now use Mollichaff Calmer. Its nice and soft, smells good and my neds love it.

i was just about to put a post up about this too.im looking for the same thing for my daughters section c mare who gets a bit on loopy on some feeds.i have had her on fast fibre too and want something to just ad to it with out making her silly my daughter has just started pony club and need her calm .i have tryed just pony nuts with hi fi ,top spec lite,hi fi molass free with cool and collected all have gone top her head so back to fast fibre.

trottingon its a nightmare isnt it what to feed have you thought of horse first relax me or the globle herbs calmer i found them very good for one of my other horses .worked better than the magic but then all horses are diffrent.

Hi-fi lite with apple seem to be the least heating with my v sensitive mare. She just has this with unmolassed sugar beet / brewers yeast and a broad spectrum supplement. Anything remotely molassesy sends her doolally especially at this time of year when they are all starting to feel a bit fruity!

Or could I just chop up some hay or a hay/straw mix and put that in his feed? I've only got him to feed so cutting up enough hay for one horse wouldn't be a big deal for me?

Tommytoo
I just got it from my local feed merchant, & I don't know where he gets it from. I asked him if he'd a got a cheaper alternative to hi fi light & that was his suggestion, I think hi fi light contains oat straw.
It could be worth ringing round to see if you can find it.
I had some linseed left over from an oldie I used to have who died a couple of years ago & she has that as well, she looks very well & has only cost me £6.80 to feed this winter, so I'm pretty happy about that.
If you google Home Farm, Merton you'll get his phone number, he might be able to suggest where you can source it in your area.

Ossichaff if you can get it, sadly we can't get it in the south, also Timothy chop by Simple Systems is good...Feed makers, if you are reading this, can someone just chop up some hay and straw and bag it in the South..we will buy it!
