Took my t.b. mare for fitting with local highly-recommended Master Saddler, Mark Fisher. WOW. i thought i knew a bit about fitting saddles, this was one of those moments when you discover how little you actually know! i've had Master Saddlers out in the past and not been impressed, but he was in a different league.

He's been working on the Event Team horses this week, fitting new saddles for Mary, Zara etc. (they're both having Barnsby Xtreems, apparently...) he told me all about the pressure test results they're getting etc, fascinating.
He examined my mare very carefully, and told me that yes, she'd be a narrow width, but he'd never put anything narrower than a medium tree on a horse like that, much better to give it the room and pad it out in front (with flocking mostly, or maybe pads). he showed me that her ribs are actually quite far down, she has very long dorsal spinous processes - so needs a saddle with deep, fat panels to bridge the gap and put the weight on her ribs, not on the muscles in the gap above them. explains why my short-pointed jump saddle wasn't right on her at all, even after 3 refits, the poor love. and her previous owner was riding her in a very narrow Prestige. about time the poor thing had a perfect saddle, i think!
good news is that i was doing the right thing with my dressage saddle, padding it up in front, and it's got deep and wide enough panels, more or less. might well be passing that one on to one of my other horses and getting her a new dressage too...
unfortunately he didn't have an Xtreem for me to try, Barnsby are modifying them after rider input and he'd just sent his back.

however, tried an Ideal Impala, and WOW, what a difference. she went to zoom off in trot, took two strides, and relaxed completely. ditto in canter. instead of pulling all the time, she was totally rideable and soft, and the saddle put me in perfect balance. now i feel really guilty... i suspected she might be like that because of the saddle, should have done this months ago instead of having the jump saddle adjusted again and again.

tried a different Ideal, might have been the springbok, and it wasn't quite as good, different balance on her, so was pushing me back into waterski position, which she hates.
so, didn't come away with a jump saddle, but have a much much better idea now, and if he can get an Xtreem in for me to compare with the Impala, i'll decide. will try a few others this week if i can sort it.
only gutting thing is a 5-6wk wait for saddle to be made. wish i'd not given up on different saddles after the whole WOW thing now, could have sorted this out last autumn.

cookies if you got this far, obviously!

madhector, i remember you saying that you loved your impala... can see why now.
mat_b - yes, it was so great finding someone SO knowledgeable who could explain things so clearly. very relieved... not going to make another £1000 mistake on a saddle...

At last ,it sounds as though there is a decent saddle fitter out there after all what with all the nightmare posts recently, mine included.

Hope you get sorted out as soon as.

Excellent, definitely puts your mind at rest when you have someone so knowledgable come out.
Interesting the team have chosen the Xtreem, I cant blame them tbh, its a lovely saddle.
Its a good tree also

I hope you get to try one soon.

Cullohill on here works for Ideal btw.

This is all good to hear as from previous posts you were rather dreading not finding a saddle or someone who was not very knowledgeable. Sounds like your chap knows his stuff and your horse thought so too!

I currently have a new saddle on order and mine is taking 8 weeks. At six now and that has been manageable but the last two to wait are becoming tedious. The six week wait will be worth it to have a properly fitting comfortable saddle.

Glad you have someone you can trust with saddles at last. It is such a tricky business and though you can learn so much about muscles and fitting them you really have to rely on the experts. Makes you wonder if its like women and bras and that most horses are going round with the wrong saddle on.

Its interesting Zara going for Barnsby especially as she is sponsored by Devoucoux!! MK has been connected with Barnsby for a while.

pinktiger, he's in south lincs... travels a lot though!
seriously, i'd have driven half the country if i'd known he was this good and this conscientious.
so so relieved and happy, i can't begin to tell you! will be able to get proper feedback from my mare soon, thank goodness!

Wow sounds like a great fitting session, I had a similar experience yesterday with my TB boy. He's been in a Wintec 2000 since I got him, and the gullet has been changed a couple of times but it was starting to rub him at the back of the panels, and did seem to end up quite far back. Saddler initially thought that some inserts in the Wintec, or a thick sheepskin pad would help, so I rode him for her with the inserts and it was evident just how far back the saddle was slipping.

She thoroughly examined him again with the saddle on and pointed out that the short points on that saddle were being pushed back by his large shoulder, then tipping saddle forwards. So he needs longer points, sitting behind his shoulder with a larger shoulder gusset and much wider panels to bear the weight rather than just either side of his spine.

So, ironically enough as I love them, she recommended an Albion! She had a K2 GP and I tried it and such a difference - no tail swishing, he was freer through his shoulder and I wasn't being tipped forwards and felt in a perfect balance, and it didn't move back at all as there was space for his shoulder to move without impeding the saddle.

Freaky! Never thought it would make so much difference. She didn't have many to try as we hadn't expected him to need a new saddle, however, she said the Albion was a beautiful fit, but suggested not to buy new as he's rising 5 and likely to change again. They don't sell 2nd hand saddles so I need to find it elsewhere! Doh. But still, the whole session was a revelation

So glad you've found what's best and that you had a confidence-inspiring session too!
