15 years old cob x ID coloured mare. Full up 15.2hh currently out of work since last autumn and fat and hairy! Been with present owner for 12 years done all sorts, but predominantly hacking, bits of xcountry, jumping, low levels clinics etc but pretty low mileage. Owner says no health concerns or lameness in the 12 years owned.
Middle Aged and very busy Owner is taking a break (genuinely as she’s a family friend) and wants a nice local home and is offering us LWVTB for 2-3 months.
Teenage daughter has ridden twice and me once, only hacked round quiet village at walk and trot and had a short canter. Mare is a little stiff and unfit, but very willing and forwards and even a little strong tbh. Currently ridden in a Pelham bit as the owner is small and says she needs it?
We are considering her and owner has suggested low to mid 4s? Just was interested in peoples thoughts?

2-3k if it passes the vet. Older and out of work is not ideal.
You’ll see them advertised for more but no one is achieving the high prices any more, except for the top drawer horses.

The bit that jumps out at me is, stiff? Do you mean lame? She shouldn't be stiff just because she's out of work. On that, I'd agree with AmyMay.

The a bit stiff is a worry especially as she is a bit older and not been in work.

Thanks all , Yes I think I would get a 2 stage vetting after the trial period. Haven’t actually talked price yet with the owner but we are riding her again on Thursday so going to have to then I guess

I’d do the vetting sooner rather than later in respect of the ‘stiff’ comment- you don’t want to work with her for 2-3 months to find something significant enough to make you not want to buy.

15 seems young for a low mileage horse to be stiff IMO, I’d be inclined to get your physio to cast an eye over them.
