Yet another insurance dilema - theft

I don't bother to insure my horses - my old lad wouldn't be covered for most things and the pony is worth nothing so have always just had money aside for vets bills and liability through BHS gold membership. But now I have a rather stunning loud leopard spot grade B appaloosa colt and am terrified someone is going to pinch him! Is it worth insuring him just incase? I think I am being a bit OTT, but what is the likelihood of him being stolen? I'm thinking very low and I'm just being my normal panicing self! Since he is so distinctive, does that make it less likely or the fact that he is desirable make it more likely? It'll cost me £20 a month to insure solely against death theft and straying. I am guessing that is better put towards increased security - but what?

tbh id be more devastated myhorse got stolen not about the money!....

but i insure mine for vets fees and thats it. I dont have liability, nor theft/death.

i think its personal choice... but as for security id be doing that regardless of insurance or not.

Obviously I'd be devastated - that goes without saying! But i've never had anything worth pinching before and now I have. This is me being normal - I panic and take thing totally out of proportion, but though insurance might give me some peace of mind.

Security is difficult as we have no electricity to the yard, so CCTV and alarms aren't possible. Land is off a private drive and looked over by house and gates etc are all locked up. It's peace of mind I'm after really, not the money!

Your pony is at risk of being stolen the same as everyone else's.

Best getting your pony micro-chipped, Freeze-marked, Make sure your fields are secure and people know that there is a;ways someone around/watching over the place. Don't leave valuable things like tack lying around and put your postcode on the inside of rugs.
We all worry that one day we will go to the yard and our beloved animals aren't there but as an owner it's your responsibility to make sure you do everything in your power to make sure your horse is safe...nobody else's.
The only reason for insurance (for theft) is so you get the ponies value back...Insurance doesn't stop your pony from being stolen, it just compensates you for your loss!!!

you can ge them fake cctv cams from argos???

might be a good idea..?

and some signs "loose dogs... guard dogs etc"....

or just get a huge dog :D

We have just fitted special cameras (nightvision too) to a location with no power :)

They don't record video, but still images if the sensors are tripped. Battery lasts for a year, has a HD card inside, as well as a SIM card.

Wow - where did you get them if you don't mind me asking? They sound great. Not just the horses we worry about as you hear of so many tack thefts (although only grooming kits etc, hay and the rugs on their back are kept there - but even hay is being stolen at the moment!)

We have public liability cover on the house insurance. It just complicates claims if you have it on other policies. We joined the Pony club just to get Public liability and when the horse sat on a car, (most out of character), the insurer asked whether we had household insurance and it turned out that would have covered it anyway!
