Well finally got ourselves sorted with a 6.5 tonne box. We collect it in a few weeks after its serviced and plated and has two new windows fitted in the luton.

So my first question is how much does Vehicle tax cost for 6.5 tonne boxes????

Secondly is there anything else i need to consider other than insurance, breakdown cover and tax??? I have had a good quote from Anthony Evans and will be taking out their full breakdown recovery as we travel quite some distance but is there anything not covered in these insurance policies that i need to consider????

And lastly .... i now have a really nice 3 year old Ifor 505 trailer that has been adapted to carry minis/shetlands aswell as being able to quickly change it to carry larger horses in the normal position. How much should i advertise it for???? Will i be able to advertise it for more as it has a larger purpose with being adapted to carry small ones???? It was purchased from an IWT dealership and was serviced only 12 months ago.

Thankies

I taxed my 4.5t lorry the other day and it only cost me £90 for 6 months - that's less than my car

So long as you aren't using it for business I think it's the same.

I don't think you need anything else - it sounds like you've got everything covered. Check through your policies though to make sure of things like 'what happens to the horses if I break down miles from home?' etc.

Don't know about the Ifor - I'm sure you'll get a good price for it though.

Cant answer your trailer Q but the tax is private light goods the same as for larger cars, light vans etc so it's about £190 I think if you pay all at once.

The only other pearls of wisdom I have for the upkeep of the lorry is to use it, loads! Take it shopping, to the pub, everything. The worst thing you can do is leave it standing and once a week is not enough. Store it on flat hard standing if you can with the handbrake off, leave it in gear or chock the wheels if necessary. I incurred some huge bills mainly as a result of leaving my handbrake on with resulting damage to the brake shoes/drums.

Keep it clean underneath. People muck out the inside but forget they pick up lots of farmyard muck as well as mud on the underside which is corrosive.

Jesus just checked the time and should have left for work 10 mins ago, sorry!

Congratulations! I have just taxed my 6 tonne lorry and it was £90.75 for six months and £165 for 1 year good luck!!! FYI NFU do a very good combined insurance and breakdown cover and i pay around £300 per year all inclusive.

I taxed my Iveco 7.5 tonne beast and it only cost £165 - less than our cars!!

You seem to have covered most things, I shopped around when looking for insurance and ended up with SEIB, tried NFU, Shearwater and a few others but the SEIB policy came out top.

Our trailer sold on Ebay and I got what I wanted for it. I tried advertising it first in all the normal places like Free-ads etc and only had tyre kickers. To get an approx value, have a scout round what everyone else with one is asking for theirs and perhaps as you have specialised it for Minis, advertise it on their sites and make a thing out of it. (Remember though what people are asking isn't what they will necessarily get for it and you must have a "Happy" amount in your mind that you want for it?)

Congratulations on new lorry

With regards to the IW trailer I would advertise it on Shetland / Mini websites - I'm sure people would be interested in it with the adaptions you have made.

OMG just found that lorry tax is cheaper than my 3.5ton!!!

Your IW should sell no probs...try horsemart etc?

Congrats on your new lorry.

As for the trailer - well I recently bought (3 mths ago) a 4 yr old Ifor 505 and paid £2500.

Have a look on ebay and see what they are selling for and that should give you a good idea. I sold my old trailer on ebay and the bidding went well and I got what I considered a good price for it.
