Do you buy your YO a christmas pressie? or is a card enough?
i've only been on the yard since end Sept so dont know whats the norm, its only a small yard with about 7 liveries, YO & Husband have about 8 horses.

So whats the done thing? and if i do get them something, what do i get them?

Thanks

YO's are evil, nasty people - don't buy them anything! Make a card out of old newspaper if you really feel you must give something.

As a YO, I always buy my liveries a bottle of wine as a 'thank you' for their business throughout the year. Hmmmmm, maybe I got it the wrong way round. Damned right! THEY should be buying ME the wine

In all seriousness, Im sure they would be surprised and delighted with chocs or wine.

What a thoughtful livery you are. Would you like to move to South Wales, we could do with a few more of your sort round here

I think the £5K a year they have out of me covers Christmas, birthdays, Hannukah, Easter, Eid, Chinese and Japanese New Years!

My liveries generally get me wine or smellies for the bath, both of which I need in large quantities! I never expect anything, but I have to say I really appreciate it, and I do work very hard for them all year - and I will be looking after their horses for them over Christmas when they are having a jolly time doing whatever normal people do on Christmas Day! But I hate Ferrero Rocher ...

I think it depends on how much they do for you. My last YO was great but charged for everything and I mean everything so tbh I felt that she'd had enough from me over the year. My current YO is a diversified farmer and I'm completely DIY so again I won't be buying him a present. I will be getting a present for the people on the yard who help out when we go away etc. I think you should go with your gut instinct

Last year I gave my YO warm coat cos he used to wander about with thinest coat and often get colds (silly bloke), this year he's buggering off to Ketcunky and gave me the YO job for 2 weeks over xmas... that the thanks i get!!!.... (it was pre arranged anyway) I haven't got him anything though and he's leaving for USA wednesday!!!!!! eek!

Last year I bought my YO a super turn-out rug for her stallion. (She'd been admiring my stally's posh Schneider rug, so I got her the same one.)

And I got a big box of nice warm gloves for all the grooms, cos they are always losing gloves and they get wet and there never seem to be quite enough to go round. I hate seeing the girls with cold, wet gloves on!

Plus the usual card, champagne, choccies, etc., of course.

(Might sound a bit extravagant, but I bring a big box of doughnuts or cookies or something for the YO and staff every time I visit the yard, so for Christmas I sort of had to do a bit more!)

I've got my YO a snuggle kit from superdrug this year - it's a mini hot water bottle and a hotchocolate and marshmallow sachet with it as she is always cold!!!
