YO giving me S because I'm putting rug on in this weather! What do you

Yes I think that I need to nip it in the bud and explain to her that I put one on so that I can ride at night.

I did say this to her side kick last night who just replied "If you put your Equenox rug on she'd be dry in half an hour" to which I replied "I havent got a spare half an hour!"

Side Kick then said "The first time you leave a rug off, your horse should never see another rug until the next season regardless of weather conditions" I just said "Oh right" and walked away. I'm not good with getting into these things and no matter what I said I would of been wrong!

Its up to you and everyone's horse is different. My tb doesn't need a rug, he is fine without and would sweat if it got warm and sunny. I've always been able to dry the saddle patch enough to ride.

My wee lad has a LW on (no filling) when its wet as he hates getting wet and is much happier rugged. If its dry then he has nothing on. As someone mentioned above, regluar grooming removes some of the oils from the coat which means your horse will feel the wet more, + risk of rain scald with persistent rain + rugging gives you a dry horse to ride!!! So long as your horse is looked after, its none of her business! Remember- Empty cans rattle the most!

Sounds like they are very much of the old school. See lots of hunters round here chucked out in April clipped with no rugs because that's how its always been done! Doesn't make it right though.

Old School is about right!

When I enquired about their worming programme she confirmed yes they do have one & also confirmed when I asked that Yes all horses stay in for 24hrs.

Now - she tells me "We worm 4 times a year and do a worm count at the end of it. If any have any worms we worm then again and that clears it up"!

It's such a perfect location for me though - one field away at the back of my house! - Takes less than 5 mins to walk it

I am not in a position to give advice about rugs on or off. I am not a "rug" person in any weather.

However, I think the important issue at hand is that it is YOUR horse so do as you see fit!
This lady is over stepping her bounds imo. I could understand if the yard had a policy that you were breaking for saftey sake, but I doubt this is the case. Do what you like! Your horse your choice!

Mine has had his light weight on, and today I put his 200g filling with neck on as it was blowing a gale!

As others have said.... your horse your choice

put a rug on your horse if you want... makes sense having a dry horse to ride when you want!

Dont think you should rug in weather like this just so your horse is dry for you to ride. When they get wet and then its windy, the poor animals get cold. Mine is out during the day with a LW and in bed at night with a fleece. None of YO business unless animal is suffering anyway

One of mine has a rug on whenever I think its going to rain because he shivers at the sight of it!! Even on a warm summers day!

My other 2 natives (yes, including a SHETLAND!) have had a rug on occassionally during all this wet weather because they have also been found shivering (they are quite old though). As long as the rugs are not warm ones then no harm!

But if I cant excercise her during the week how can I expect her to perform when competing?

My TB is rugged with a LW TO (when she home lol ) the other two have nothing but they are naative types and don't do a lot, but th TB starts shivering as soon as it rains,

mine is mainly naked as with the rest of them, but I want to ride tomorrow so have told YO to put light weight on.

The rest are naked but I dont care as they are not mine !!

Tell her F off or just ignore her !! your horse not hers

Have to say haven't read the posts here.......BUt, my horse has been rugged in a lightweight for the last month or so. The weather has been apalling and I too have taken stick from other people. I DO NOT CARE....my horse is pampered and I make no excuses for it. My neighbour commented the other day that her horse has grown a "fluffy" coat already, HOW DREADFUL!, They only grow a coat when they are COLD! My horse is rugged and stabled when the weather is at its worst, I don't care if its July! Mind you, HE LOOKS GOOD!!!!p.s. would you go out without a coat in this weather, July or not?

mine have rugs on if its absolutely tipping it down as they have no shelter of any kind in there fields. if there is a storm they stay in though, more erring on the side of caution as the area TV masts stand in their fields and dont really want to be electrocuting them !

otto nearly has a heart attact if you accidently zap him with the electric fence never mind a bolt of lightening .

Mine have been rugged for the last month in light weight rain sheets. Some of the other liveries havnt rugged and I have seen their horses standing in the hedgerow shivering and their coats standing. I was asked yesterday by one of them why my girl was so shiney ... I replied that it was partly because she was rugged!

with all this rain i have had to rug seren, she has indicated that she needs it (found one trembling, frozen horse one day-not again! poor thing)
rug finally off today as no rain predicted
other peoples advice can be useful, but sometimes they just butt in, you knwo your horse best after all

Both mine (arabs) are out rugged at the moment... either middleweight rugs with necks and I even resorted to the heavyweight a week ago as they were staying out overnight and the weather was vile. Anything less than a middleweight TO at the mo and they come in shivering and making me feel extremely guilty. Crazy damn weather...

im rugging my welsh cob in his LW, when we have constant rain like this horses in work can get rainscald, and i dont want boy to get that! also when its windy and rainy it can get really cold so the LW just keeps the rain and wind out!

Ours have access to stables directly from the field but the TB and the 3 year old have lightweights on. They were both shivering a couple of weeks ago although its summer!! lol

My 2 have access to a field shelter. I tend to leave my old mare unrugged because she's got a Cushings coat & gets hot easily, but my ISH has had his summer turnout on & off for the last few weeks as he gets cold easily. It's on & off like a yoyo dep on my best guess re weather. I hate to think of him being too hot or too cold. He's even had his middleweight turnout on overnight once or twice over the past month or so.

You have to do what you think is best for your horse. At my friend's yard, the YO has this stupid rule that all the horses have their rugs on from a certain date in autumn, then they stay on 24/7 til a magic day in spring when they come off & stay off. WTF??????

Beau has a lightweight on, Ive just got the weight back on him and dont want him shivering it off.

You do what is right for your horse.

Beware a lightweight rug w/ no lining can get v. cold as it it like wearing a mac by your skin, our mare got 'damp' and a bit of rainscaled in a lightweight with no lining. possibly a sheet underneath?

I'm in a different position to you as I can bring my lad in early enough that he can dry off before riding. Occasionally I put on a rain sheet but mostly I don't need to bother.

Don't concern yourself about what the YO is saying. It's got nothing to do with her, it's not detremental to your horse so she should mind her own business. It's your horse, you look after it as you want to.

I have the same prop with YO so I ask myself why do's my horse look good in coat and a happy boy better than theres who look depressed !! because hes comfortable in his lightweight at night and warm we wouldn't sleep outside at night at the moment with nothing on would we.

Another here who doesn't rug, in fact none of the horses at our yard (includes competiton warmbloods and TBs) are routinely rugged although the thinner skinned ones have had rugs on overnight once or twice just recently.

It is my choice not to rug though, and nobody would criticise me if I did start putting rugs on, and equally the YO should respect your choice to use rugs.
