YO says I must now buy my own stable

My mare is kicking the wall due to another dominant mare next door to her and despite me buying stable wall mats, it's continuing. YO says it's weakening the structure of the entire stable block (made of breezeblock). I can only stay if I buy my own timber stable which I then can take away with me when/if I ever leave. (I'm looking for my own property with land)This will be part of the courtyard, she'll be able to see others (she gets sep anx), but will be positioned next to haybarn and walkway. I have agreed to do this, so don't want a debate about the whys and wherefores.

I need to get this organised quickly. What type of structure should I get/be looking at? Any thoughts? (16hh Tb)
 
Definately get kick boards - right up to the top (you can choose half or full). My mare kicked through them once or twice, but they're easily replaced. Perhaps put your wall mats on top?

Louvre boards (vents) at the sides.
Windows -grilled perhaps, with openings that can be shut in really wiindy weather.
Overhang boarded out - so you have storage there -we keep clean rugs there.
Metal chewstrips on and around door - they love to chew idoors if bored otherwise...
We just had a portable field shelter built , then had a door put on it (extra wide - it has a side part that opens, and a normal door next to that. That way you can use it as a stable when you move, or a field shelter, or haylage store (we can roll big bales through the door...)
Portables are designed to be towed around oyur own land, but they would still have to be dismantled to be moved further, so perhaps a normal stable would be the same (although you would have to put down a row of bricks and cement for it to sit on.. This should be easy to remove when you go).
Beware- stable companies often are just like builders - really hard to tie down.. However our latest portables got put up very quickly - so perhaps a reflection on the market..
We paid £1300 for a 12x12 portable stable last month. you may well find cheaper, and definately will find more expensive, but we know the firm and have used them before...
 
Thankyou both, I like the idea of a mobile stable. Honey, is the £1300 you paid inclusive of delivery, erection and vat?

The cheapest I've found is £1700 and need it cheaper.
 
What about implications regarding planning permission or the lack of it in connection with this proposed stable/field shelter thing? Just a thought before you spend a shed load of money and then end up moving if the structure is not allowed under planning rules...
 
Yes. All included. The firm is only a couple of miles from my stables though, and we know him. To be honest we were a bit shocked at that - we paid £1100 for a similar one three years ago.

Have a look on e bay. Some firms advertise them on there.

Yes, this is why it must be mobile - don't need pl perm for them.:)

Yes, have been it's a minefield - don't quite understand what's best value or what I need:confused:
 
Does your YO know that it is the dominant mare alongside that is making your horse defensive? Could she not move her to another stable away from this mare? Kicking the walls is not good for your mares joints and breeze blocks are rather pathetic when pushed around - we had a wall come down in a box once - the horse was rubbing its butt a bit to energetically on it.
 
YO is not willing to take the risk, believes my horse is a kicker of walls, more generally.

As I said, I have agreed to do this, so that isn't the debate, but thanks for being concerned for me. This Yard is cheap, in walking distance to my house and I have many friends there. To do what YO wants/requires is a small price for me to pay.

Just need some guidance now about what to buy.
 
No help with mobile stable I'm afraid, but as previous owner of the worst wall/door kicker I've ever seen I can offer a couple of tips.

A horse I had several years ago (now sadly deceased) was dreadful for wrecking stables to the point of injuring herself.
The only things I found helpful were to keep her out as much as possible with a cosy field shelter. So she could go in and out as she pleased and that in itself eased the kicking - though I accept your horses reasons sound less stable related and more to do with her neighbour.
Then when she HAD to be in we found lining the lower half of the walls and door with vey stiff, bristly brushes made her think twice. They weren't sharp enough to cause harm but did give an unpleasant feeling if she tried to kick.

Thankyou sweetie - just sent him 2 emails yesterday about this one and wondered if I was on the right track. Is this a good one, what we all think?
Will this be ok for a 16hh kicker( though, I'm pretty sure she won't kick on her own in it)?
 
Looks ok. For a kicker, I'd ask if you can have full height kickboards - not just 4', as if she happens to kick above 4' she would take a plank out instead...
 
I have lined the wall in my wall kicker's stable with cow mats from Mole Valley Farmers, they're about 6' x 3' and about an 1'' thick, cost about £35 each. Prevents damage to horse/walls and deadens the sound too
