I'm going to my first Horse Sales today, just to have a look and see what prices things go for. I'm quite excited, but a little nervous,as I'm going on my own. I'm not really sure what to expect, there is a tack auction before the horse seal, where I may buy something.... any words of wisdom out there?

not a bad sale at all at york sure you will enjoy your day out they do sell warrented horses as well as unwarrented ask in office for conditions of sale

If this is the renamed Rufforth Park sale then it is quiet different from most. The horses are stabled & they are shown in an indoor school. It gave you a real chance to try the horses out. This was years ago though, but it is in the same are that York sales are now held. Perhaps someone else maybe able to confirm.

I am not sure that York Sale and the old Rufforth Park are the same sale. The York sales are held at the huge cattle market site at Merton and I my memory serves me right no indoor school or stables.

Personally have heard mixed reports about York Sales but guess they will be much the same as all the horse sales held up and down the country at cattle markets, all pretty similar.

I bought a 2 1/2 yr old cob cross arab there for 1250 outside the ring as he never met his reserve, no issues at all. A brilliant traditiona; coloured cob 4yr old gelding who is doing fantastically with his new owners in chaps classes and hopes to qualify for hoys.( was found to have a sarcoid when we got him home and a bit cold backed though) £1500 and a 15.2 sportshorse type, 8 yrs who although not dangerous just isn't everybody's cup of tea as he's rather quirky for 1600. Might give you an idea of prices.
Have a good day, I love it there. The tack seems to go through for much higher prices than our local market though.

Think you are talking about Murton(sp) Horse Sale?? which is based in york (or just on the outskirts but classed as york), I've been to it many times and it isnt too bad, Seen acouple of horses in bad shape but they do have some1 there to check them out if you feel the need to report it. The worst i saw was a young horse with a 'huge' gash under its forlock which opened more when forlock was lifted. I stayed with the horse while my friend went to find some1 to report it to, an inspector came, saw the state and removed it off the sale list, delt with the 'dealer' and horse was treated straight away. So all in all, its a good sale
