York Sales this Friday

Have just looked at the catalogue for this Friday's sale at York and there are some interesting lots for sale.
A palomino gelding which has been used in a riding school, a couple of friesian mares that have run with a friesian stallion this summer. A pb american quarter horse fully registered with the American Quarter horse society. A 2year old bay filly by Bertolini (USA) out of a dam Guardienne ( by Hector Protector). Callitwhatyoulike an ex racer unplaced in two NH bumper races. Northern Candy another ex racer, this time flat which has failed to make any impression in 6 tries at sprint distances.
Plus many more, if anyone is interested in seeing the catalogue as they are thinking of visiting the sale or are looking to buy from auction please pm me.

I know me too but other half is working and I don't have the money or time to get any more horses so it would be a bit heartbreaking in one way to go.
I posted it on here because I know a few months ago a few people said they liked friesians and if they were looking for one and have experience at foaling or with youngsters etc it may be a cheaper way to get hold of one of the breed than buying direct from a breeder/seller?
Just a thought.
There are some nice horses listed though and a few for sale due to uni/college etc.
Tbh we very nearly went to York instead of Leominster when we got Mcfly last year but the day we were going ( as both fell on the same day grr) there were more possibles at Leominster than York that time.
 
there are some sad cases there and I dont think id buy one from the sales. have regularly seen them at york then end up at another sale the following day and more surprisingly they add so much experience overnight!
Would make me wonder why the friesians are going through the sales as they are really quite sort after especially if they are mares, could be that they arent pure or dont have any papers. I would prefer to buy one off a breeder if I was that interested.
 
I try to get to York for most sales. Have both bought and sold there. The standard is better than at some of the other sales I've been to and you are no more likely to be ripped of than by some private sellers!!!
 
I know that the sales secretary was very helpful to me when I requested information from them last year. I was very impressed by their professionalism, friendliness and easy to approach attitude. I would have loved to have gone there in person but as I have already said we had to choose between there and Leominster that day. Unfortunately partner worked shifts and I don't drive so we had to go when he was available to drive which limited our options really.
I know people could say yes we could have waited and looked around it was not that simple. I had already been paying a retainer fee for 2 stables since August before I got my first horse in mid Sept. I did this because I liked the stables, they were near to home and a good price.
The yard is now full and tbh I didn't want to lose the chance of losing a stable as we had planned to have 2 horses in the first place. However I did fear that I may have ended up paying full price for an empty stable at the time because if the yo had been approached at the time and could have filled it I would have done the same in their position.
Therefore as soon as we got the loan horse and I knew when my funds would be available from the solicitor after remortgaging, paying off ex and loans etc I started looking at the sales more thoroughly.
We bought Mcfly at Leominster on the 29th Sept last year and I think the same day the sale at York was coloured and spotted horses. Unfortunately due to my daughter's riding ability ie novice there were not enough suitable candidates at York that day in the catalogue. Plenty of nice sorts though but too many youngsters or the one's that would have been suitable were too small and we wanted something near the 15 hands marks as my daughter is tall for her age.
I may still go to York one day though as I have a good friend in Yorkshire and I know she is also keen to go and visit too.
We were novices at buying horses but I did plenty of groundwork before we went to the auction.
I have both sold and bought at livestock and conventional auctions before but never horses.
To be perfectly truthful I didn't want to go to the horse sales before actually going with the readies so to speak because if we had seen a horse we actually did really like it would have been heartbreaking to not be in a position of buying.
We went to Leominster with the intention of returning home with a horse that day because on paper we had seen a few nice sorts. We could have quite easily ( not had the money though lol) come back with about 2 more that day that we really did like as well.
However if we had not bought one it would not have been as bad as going and leaving the cash at home and seeing our dream horse.
I would def buy a horse from a sales again if the need arose. I would much rather stick with the better run auctions though like Leominster, York and a few others I have read and heard about with good reputations than buying a horse from some of the more dubious ones.
Rabatsa I also agree that you are no more likely to be ripped off at good sales than by some private sellers.
I researched horses for sale and auctions for nearly 2 years before we actually went to buy and I had a good idea of the general 'going' price of a horse around that time.
Although I still think we paid a good price for our lad (1800) because coloured horses do fetch the money. The sales we attended was busy and I was told it was because at least one auction had been cancelled before that date. In fact we would have attended that earlier auction in September were it not cancelled.
If we had waited another month or two we may have got a horse for a lot cheaper but at what price because I may have been paying full rent for basically an empty stable.
But yes York is a good auction from what I have heard about it and one day I will get the chance to see for myself.
Btw if anyone is 'into' donkeys there is a well handled donkey stallion for sale in the auction listed on Friday.
